Action video games boost reading skills, study suggests

Feb. 28, 2013 ? Much to the chagrin of parents who think their kids should spend less time playing video games and more time studying, time spent playing action video games can actually make dyslexic children read better. In fact, 12 hours of video game play did more for reading skills than is normally achieved with a year of spontaneous reading development or demanding traditional reading treatments.

The evidence, appearing in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on February 28, follows from earlier work by the same team linking dyslexia to early problems with visual attention rather than language skills.

"Action video games enhance many aspects of visual attention, mainly improving the extraction of information from the environment," said Andrea Facoetti of the University of Padua and the Scientific Institute Medea of Bosisio Parini in Italy. "Dyslexic children learned to orient and focus their attention more efficiently to extract the relevant information of a written word more rapidly."

The findings come as further support for the notion that visual attention deficits are at the root of dyslexia, a condition that makes reading extremely difficult for one out of every ten children, Facoetti added. He emphasized that there is, as of now, no approved treatment for dyslexia that includes video games.

Facoetti's team, including Sandro Franceschini, Simone Gori, Milena Ruffino, Simona Viola, and Massimo Molteni, tested the reading, phonological, and attentional skills of two groups of children with dyslexia before and after they played action or non-action video games for nine 80-minute sessions. The action video gamers were able to read faster without losing accuracy. They also showed gains in other tests of attention.

"These results are very important in order to understand the brain mechanisms underlying dyslexia, but they don't put us in a position to recommend playing video games without any control or supervision," Facoetti said.

Still, there is great hope for early interventions that could be applied in low-resource settings. "Our study paves the way for new remediation programs, based on scientific results, that can reduce the dyslexia symptoms and even prevent dyslexia when applied to children at risk for dyslexia before they learn to read."

And, guess what? Those kids will also be having fun.

Samsung KNOX Is Brilliant - Business Insider

Earlier this week, Samsung announced its latest way to win business from Apple: a technology called Samsung Knox.

Knox is a new feature that is part of Samsung's SAFE program (which stands for Samsung For Enterprises).?It lets you divide your phone into two halves, one side for work and one side for your personal life.

The work side can be controlled by an employer's IT department. IT can dictate the apps and add all the pesky security features and controls they want. The personal side is controlled by you, and that's where you can load whatever games or other Android apps you want.

Knox is available on any SAFE-certified phone. Right now that's the Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II.

So far, reviewers like it. The Verge's Chris Ziegler say it's easy to tell the work side from personal side and switching between them is quick. CNET's walkthough showed it was simple to use, too.

Samsung isn't the first to come up with this idea. Enterprise software company VMware also has a product like this called Horizon Mobile.?LG even won an award last year at CES for its LG Revolution phone which included Horizon software. Plus, BlackBerry offers a similar thing with its new phone, a feature called BlackBerry Balance.

VMware hoped to bring Horizon to the iPhone, too. That would have been big news, because it would have meant Apple was willing to let VMware fiddle with iOS. Not so. VMware does have an iOS app called Horizon Mobile, but the app only allows IT professionals to install apps on an employee's iPhone. It doesn't split the phone into two.

Knox and SAFE are two of Samsung's biggest weapons to win against Apple. Samsung is deliberately loading its smartphones with features to make enterprise IT departments love it. Its hope is that this will encourage IT departments to buy fleets of phones for their employees. Or, if they don't buy the phones, Samsung would like IT professionals to ask their employees to buy Samsung SAFE devices.

Stay tuned for BI Intelligence's in-depth analysis of how Samsung is pursing the enterprise, publishing soon.

Washington, DC, February 27, 2013 -- Patients who tested positive for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) took an average of 387 days following hospital discharge to be clear of the organism, according to a new study published in the March issue of the American Journal of Infection Control, the official publication of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).

The study was conducted in the Shaare Zedek Medical Center, a 700-bed university-affiliated general hospital in Jerusalem, Israel. The research team analyzed follow-up cultures from 97 CRE-positive patients who had been discharged from the medical center between January 2009 and December 2010.

The average time until cultures became negative was 387 days. At three months, 78 percent of patients remained culture positive; at six months, 65 percent remained positive; at nine months, 51 percent, and at one year 39 percent of patients remained positive, meaning they could potentially become re-infected or transmit the germ to others.

Risk factors for extended carriage included the number of hospitalization days, whether and how often the patient was re-hospitalized, and whether the patient had an active infection as opposed to colonization without signs of active disease.

This is one of the first studies to determine length of CRE duration after hospital discharge and provides vital insight into treating formerly CRE-positive patients upon readmission as to limit the spread of this virulent and often deadly pathogen.

The authors state, "Patients with multiple hospitalizations or those who were diagnosed with clinical CRE disease should be assumed to have a more extended duration of CRE coverage and should therefore be admitted under conditions of isolation and cohorting until proven to be CRE-negative. These measures will reduce the hospitalization of CRE-positive patients among the general patient population, potentially preventing the spread of CRE."

CRE are extremely difficult-to-treat, multidrug-resistant organisms that are emerging in the United States. A CRE strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae recently spread through the National Institutes of Health hospital outside Washington, DC, killing six people. Because of increased reports of these multidrug-resistant germs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently alerted clinicians about the need for additional prevention steps to prevent transmission.

Oil price gains to above $94 on weaker dollar

The price of oil rose by more than a dollar Monday, to above $94 a barrel, as it recovered from sharp drops last week and echoed strong gains in European stock markets.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for April delivery was up $1.11 to $94.24 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 29 cents to settle at $93.13 in New York on Friday.

Oil dived last week on the possibility that the Federal Reserve might stop offering monetary stimulus, which its most recently released minutes suggested was possible. That would strengthen the dollar, making crude more expensive for international investors, and shut off a supply of money that some say had been fueling speculative trades in commodity markets.

The price of crude stabilized Friday, helped by the European Commission's prediction that the recession afflicting the economy of the 17 countries sharing the euro will bottom out during the first half of the year.

Investors, meanwhile, are keeping an eye on a new round of talks beginning Tuesday in Kazakhstan between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

Iran, nominally one of the world's top oil producers, has had to make substantial output cuts because U.S.-led sanctions are greatly limiting its crude exports.

Also supporting prices was a broad rise in stock markets that suggested a more positive view of global economic growth. The gains were driven by Japan, where investors expected the next head of the Bank of Japan to be supportive of looser monetary policy to kick-start growth.

That helped offset a survey showing Chinese manufacturing declined to a four-month low in February. While the survey temporarily sent oil prices to a session low of $92.96, some analysts said the result may not be as bad as it seems because of the weeklong Lunar New Year holiday, which fell in mid-February this year.

In London, Brent crude was up $1.55 to $115.65 on the ICE futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline was up 5.18 cents at $3.3176 a gallon.

? Heating oil added 3.99 cents to $3.1417 a gallon.

? Natural gas jumped 10.9 cents to $3.40 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Bryant outscores Nowitzki as Lakers top Mavs

DALLAS (AP) ? Kobe Bryant was just a little better than Dirk Nowitzki in a spirited game befitting Western Conference leaders ? not teams battling for ninth place.

Bryant had 38 points to win a scoring duel with Nowitzki, and Steve Nash helped beat his former team by getting 20 points for the first time with the Los Angeles Lakers in a 103-99 victory against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.

Nowitzki finished with a season-high 30 in a game that had a playoff feel from the start, even though both teams still have plenty of ground to make up to even qualify for the postseason. They trail eighth-place Houston by several games, but they are the franchises that have the last three NBA titles won by teams from the West.

Bryant and Nowitzki had 16 points apiece in the first half and were still even at 24 after the third quarter before Bryant scored 14 in the fourth, including seven in the last 3 minutes. They were a combined 8 of 9 from 3-point range and hit 24 shots and 12 free throws between them.

"It's fun," said Bryant, who also had 12 rebounds and seven assists. "He's one of my all-time favorites. He's a throwback type of player. He doesn't mind the physicality. He made some incredible plays down the stretch."

Bryant, who went past the 31,000-point mark, was playing in Mark Cuban's building two days after the outspoken Dallas owner suggested in a radio interview that the Lakers might have to consider dumping the five-time NBA champion through the amnesty clause.

The Lakers responded by calling the comment inappropriate, and Cuban defended himself before the game.

"Amnesty THAT," Bryant tweeted after the game.

"I'm sure if he wants to amnesty Dirk, that's something we'll be willing to entertain," Bryant told reporters.

The Mavericks were so frustrated trying to guard Bryant, O.J. Mayo got called for a foul and a technical when he jumped around wildly after the whistle blew on a drive to the basket by Bryant. Nash made the technical shot, and Bryant hit his pair of free throws for a 94-90 lead.

"He's been the best player in my decade," said Nowitzki, who also had his season high with 13 rebounds after missing the first 27 games following knee surgery. "I've been in the NBA a long time and he's the one player I love to watch. It was a big game on the national TV stage. It was a fun one. We just came up a little bit short."

Nowitzki was called for a technical earlier in the fourth quarter after a display similar to Mayo's when he missed a shot during a physical sequence with Metta World Peace.

"It was very intense," said Mavericks rookie Jae Crowder, who spent his share of time trying to guard Bryant. "From the crowd standpoint, from the player standpoint, from the officiating. You could tell."

Three times in the final 3 minutes, Bryant put the Lakers up four after the Mavericks had pulled within two. The last gave Los Angeles a 101-97 lead with 46.9 seconds left.

Nowitzki scored to make it a two-point game, and World Peace missed a free throw to give Dallas a chance to tie. Mayo missed a 3-pointer with about 5 seconds left, and Bryant clinched it with a free throw that made it a two-possession game.

"That's why he's Kobe Bryant," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "He's not John Smith. No disrespect to John Smith, whoever he is. That's what does. That's what he loves. That's what he trains for."

Nash had 13 of his 20 points and three of his four 3-pointers in the second half, including one that answered Mayo's only bucket from long range and put the Lakers up 99-95.

"He came on in the second half and really gave us a big boost," Bryant said. "He was very aggressive and it forced them to make changes defensively. He's extremely clutch."

Dwight Howard had three big free throws in the fourth, including one that put Los Angeles ahead for good at 91-90, and finished with nine points and 13 rebounds.

The Lakers had the biggest lead at six ? several times ? and the Mavericks erased each one through three quarters. Nowitzki's 3-pointer from the top of the key late in the third made him 4 of 4 from long range and capped a 7-0 run for a 71-70 Dallas lead, but Bryant scored twice on drives after a timeout to put the Lakers in front again.

In the first half, Nowitzki was 5 of 8 from the floor, made both 3-pointers and all four free throws and led everyone with eight rebounds. Bryant, meanwhile, was 3 of 4 from long range, including a pair from well behind the arc, but just 1 of 6 inside the line. He had a game-high six assists before halftime.

NOTES: Bryant got a technical in the first quarter when he gestured at referee Ken Mauer after Darren Collison stole ball. It was his league-leading 13th technical ? one ahead of DeMarcus Cousins of Sacramento. A one-game suspension is in order when a player reaches 16 technicals. ... Mavericks C Chris Kaman entered the game in the second quarter after missing 10 straight games with a concussion. ... The Mavericks scored at least 30 points in the first quarter for the fifth time in six games.

The seven creepiest teachers who allegedly banged or inappropriately touched their students this week [SLIDESHOW]

It?s somewhat slim pickings this week for teachers getting busted for allegedly having sex with or ? in one case ? allegedly feeling up and getting high with their students.

Nevertheless, at least seven teachers managed to find their way in the news for such extracurricular activities. The Daily Caller whipped together the slideshow below based on teacher-student sex stories that appeared on respectable national and local news websites this week alone.

Singapore players go door-to-door to bring in crowds

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Fed up of playing in front of sparse crowds in Singapore's poorly attended S.League, players from Balestier Khalsa are going door-to-door to try to drum up their fan base.

"The more often the players go knocking on doors, the higher the chances of them becoming familiar with residents," Balestier chairman S Thavaneson told Monday's Today newspaper.

"Who knows, they may become curious and decide to watch a game or two."

While Singaporeans are huge football fans, they are far more interested in watching English Premier League giants Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal on television rather than going to see local teams like Balestier, Woodlands Wellington and Tanjong Pagar United.

Average attendances in the 12-team S.League fell to 932 last year and organisers are heavily promoting a 'Support our S.League' campaign to address the concerns.

Thavaneson was hopeful the door-to-door campaign could help Balestier sell out their small stadium in central Singapore throughout the 2013 season, which began on Wednesday.

"There are 100,000 residents in Toa Payoh, if we can bring in just 3 percent of them to our stadium, we will have a full house each time," Thavaneson said.

WebRTC ? Ringing A Mobile Phone Near You | The Mozilla Blog

MWC 2013 Barcelona EricssonWebRTC or Web Real-Time Communications?is an open source project led by Mozilla and a number of other companies, aiming to enable the Web with Real Time Communication (RTC) capabilities?including video calls and file-sharing (currently a Firefox first), between browsers that can easily be integrated across every website. WebRTC is being standardized by the?W3C WebRTC working group, to enable developers to more easily integrate real-time communications across the Web, whether on websites or mobile web apps.

WebRTC goes beyond VoIP and video conferencing, with no plugins to download or install that may not be compatible with all the browsers consumers use across desktop, mobile or tablet. The benefits of WebRTC are clear, imagine being able to shop online for a product and clicking on a product page where you can have a live video call with a customer service representative who shows you the gadget you are thinking of buying. Or as we?demonstrated recently, being able to?easily share almost anything on your computer or mobile device with family or friends: vacation photos, memorable videos ? or even just a link to a news story you thought they might be interested in ? simply by dragging the item into your video chat window.

Today, all parts of WebRTC,?getUserMedia, PeerConnection and DataChannels?are available to Firefox Aurora users.?getUserMedia allows a developer to capture the user?s camera and microphone data (with the user?s permission) easily. PeerConnection enables the audio and video calling in a secure, hassle-free way, while DataChannels, which Mozilla is the first to implement, can be used by itself or combined with an audio/video chat to send almost any data that the browser can access. In addition, all voice, audio and data communications are encrypted allowing for highly secure human or data communication exchanges.

MWC 2013 Barcelona Ericsson

At Mobile World Congress this week, Mozilla, Ericsson and AT&T are taking WebRTC to the next level by demonstrating a proof of concept enabling Firefox to sync with a consumers existing phone number and provide calling services without any plugins to download. A demo, at our booths (Hall 8.1, booth F20 ? Mozilla; Hall 2, location 2D140 ? Ericsson), shows how consumers can easily take and receive video calls from their mobile phones or desktop browser using WebRTC or share their web experiences with friends or family who might be on a desktop PC or mobile phone across the other side of the world. The joint demonstration leverages Ericsson?s Web Communications Gateway, the Mozilla Firefox Social API and WebRTC support in Firefox. The demonstration also shows how Firefox can perform many functions usually confined to a mobile device, such as voice and video calls and SMS/MMS messaging. You can read the complete announcement here.

University of Colorado Told Women to Avoid Rape By Peeing, Vomiting, and Menstruating on Command

College Tells Women to Avoid Rape By Peeing, Vomiting, and Menstruating on CommandThe University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Department of Public Safety's website updated its "What to do if you are attacked" page this week to advise female students to pee, vomit, and bleed their way out of being rape victims.

The site was updated Monday night, after the Colorado House of Representatives passed a number of gun control bills, including one that would ban people with concealed weapons permits from carrying guns on the campuses of public universities, and a few days after Colorado Rep. Joe Salazar argued in support of the bill by saying that some people "don't know when they're going to be raped." His comment (which he later apologized for) was fairly innocuous ? like a .5 on the scale of 1 to Todd Akin ? but that's ostensibly why the University of Colorado felt the need to update their website with tips that included "Tell your attacker that you have a disease or are menstruating," and "Vomiting or urinating may also convince the attacker to leave you alone." Hopefully!

College Tells Women to Avoid Rape By Peeing, Vomiting, and Menstruating on Command

Once the internet discovered the updated page (Michelle Malkin tweeting her dismay helped matters), the university quickly posted an update explaining that the page "was created in 2006 as supplemental material for women who had completed an internationally recognized Rape Aggression Defense course offered free of charge to UCCS students" and then took the tips down completely. But thanks to Google Cache (see above screencap), we'll never forget these soundproof ways to prevent rape via bodily functions.

BP tanker drivers begin strike at Petroineos refinery

LONDON (Reuters) - BP tanker drivers have begun a three-day strike at Petroineos's Grangemouth refinery in Scotland over a plan to transfer some of them to another employer, which would affect their pensions and pay.

Some 42 members of trade union Unite are striking over Air BP's decision to award a contract to express delivery company DHL to take over the transport of fuel to Scottish airports such as Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

The switch will entail the transfer of 15 BP employees on an aviation distribution contract to DHL in March, a BP spokesman said.

The strike began at 4 a.m. British Time on Friday and will go on until 8 a.m. British Time on Monday, Unite said.

"Two thirds of the workforce affected stand to lose up to 1,500 pounds a year on their salary because they're losing a share-match scheme that BP introduced last year as opposed to a pay rise," a Unite spokesman said in an interview by phone from the picket line.

He added that one third of the staff on the aviation contract will lose up to 13,000 pounds a year per person from their pensions.

"The dispute has been rumbling on since last year, when BP offered the share-match scheme instead of a percentage pay rise," he said.

BP said that contingency plans had been put in place to try to minimise disruption to fuel deliveries.

"We've been sending deliveries using other drivers to ensure there is continuity of supply to airports and retail forecourts," the BP spokesman said. "We believe stocks are at a good level."

RHA MA150

It's pretty tough to find decent-sounding earphones under $30; despite plenty of advances in audio technology, cheap drivers tend to sound, well, cheap. That said, Apple recently set a bar with its EarPods, which now come bundled with iPhones and higher-end iPods, and sound surprisingly punchy for a design that sits just outside the ear canal. But RHA seems to have the formula down pat. Its latest model, the MA150, packs some serious audio power for just $19.95 (list), so it's our Editors' Choice for low-cost earphones.

Design
The MA150 looks like any other inexpensive pair of earphones; each plastic enclosure is all black, with rounded, rubber eartips. RHA packs two additional eartip pairs in the box in different sizes, but I had no trouble with the default ones. The soft rubber eartips are very comfortable and create a nice seal that blocks a considerable amount of external noise.

The black cable is thin and a little prone to tangling, but it's no worse than any other inexpensive earphone pair. That said,?I heard some cable thump through the earpieces while walking; it wasn't terrible, but if you're sensitive to that effect and plan on running with the MA150, you may want to try a different pair.

Note that the MA150 lacks an inline mic and phone controls. If you need something that lets you make and receive calls, have a look at the $50 RHA MA450i. The MA150 also doesn't come with a carrying case, although the recycled paper packaging is a nice touch.

Performance
For this review, I tested the MA150 with an iPhone 5 and a series of tracks in a variety of formats and bit rates.?More often than not, I liked what I heard. Rage Against the Machine's "Fistful of Steel" sounded positively huge, with a massive kick drum, and clear if slightly muted vocals and hi-hat cymbals. The Apple EarPods delivered a more open sound in a back-to-back comparison, but with considerably less bass and overall excitement in the high range.

"No Lie (Feat. Drake)," by 2 Chainz, rumbled and boomed just the way it should; the MA150 doesn't deliver the same level of bass as, say, a Beats by Dr. Dre pair, but you do get the same voluminous low-end extension and real, if a little soft, electronic kick punch. Flunk's trip-hop track, "Indian Rope Trick," sounded clear and reasonably spacey, thanks to the heavily effected and delayed vocal, but it wasn't the most open sound I've heard. Nonetheless, the tight bass and sufficient weight from the 10mm drivers was enough.RHA MA150

The taiko drums at the start of "Vespertillo," from the Batman Begins soundtrack, sounded ominous and rumbled beautifully, while tortured airy synthesizers loomed in the background. On the other hand, Depeche Mode's "Precious" sounded a little too closed in and flat; this is a tough track that becomes murky with the wrong headphones, and it's clear it was too much for the MA150.

Conclusions
Make no mistake: The MA150 is not a high-end earphone pair. But for just 20 bucks, it gives you a taste of what's possible with good audio, and shows you just how bad pack-in earbuds sound, assuming your phone or MP3 player even came with any. If you prefer a more open design that doesn't mask environmental sounds?say, for running outdoors?and that has no audible cable thump, the Apple EarPods will serve you well, and they also include an in-line remote and mic, although they cost $10 more.

The aforementioned RHA MA450i, in addition to also including a remote and mic, deliver?slightly more transparent and detailed sound, although the sonic signature is also considerably brighter, with less bass punch. Finally, if you have a bit more money to spend, we're fans of the AKG K 350, which when compared back to back with the MA150, deliver more detail, more air, and more space around the instruments, as well as a tighter (if less bombastic) low-end.

Vibrant mix of marine life found at extreme ocean depths

Feb. 21, 2013 ? The first scientific examinations of data recorded during a record-setting expedition have yielded new insights about the diversity of creatures that live and thrive in the cold, dark, and highly pressurized habitats of the world's deepest points and their vastly unexplored ecosystems.

Natalya Gallo of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego will present preliminary findings from the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition, a project led by James Cameron in collaboration with Scripps, and supported by National Geographic and Rolex, on Feb. 22 (GS09: Community Ecology Session, 8:45 a.m. PST) at the 2013 Aquatic Sciences Meeting of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography in New Orleans.

Gallo, a graduate student with biological oceanographer Lisa Levin's group, analyzed 25 hours of video captured during Cameron's historic March 26, 2012, solo dive 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) below the ocean surface to the Challenger Deep in the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench, as well as separate dives (also during the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition) to the New Britain Trench and Ulithi, also in the Pacific Ocean. The footage was taken from five cameras equipped on the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER submersible that Cameron piloted to the Challenger Deep. Additional footage came from specialized "lander" deep ocean vehicles developed in collaboration with Scripps engineer Kevin Hardy that captured samples at various depths.

Early results of Gallo's analysis reveal a vibrant mix of organisms, different in each trench site. The Challenger Deep featured fields of giant single-cell amoebas called "xenophyophores," sea cucumbers, and enormous shrimp-like crustaceans called amphipods. The New Britain Trench featured hundreds of stunning stalked anemones growing on pillow lavas at the bottom of the trench, as well as a shallower seafloor community dominated by spoon worms, burrowing animals that create a rosette around them by licking organic matter off the surrounding sediment with a tongue-like proboscis. In contrast, Ulithi's seafloor ecosystem in the Pacific atolls featured high sponge and coral biodiversity.

As the submersible and landers pushed into deeper waters, the variety of species declined, with each depth dominated by a handful of key organisms. At shallow depths in the New Britain Trench, Gallo observed strange rotund but graceful animals called sea cucumbers swimming in the water column. Different species of sea cucumbers were present even in the great depths of the Challenger Deep but appear to have adapted to these depths by decreasing in size, not swimming, and feeding by orienting themselves with the currents. The sea cucumbers seen in the Challenger Deep at approximately 11 kilometers (approximately 36,000 feet) likely represent a new species and are the first recorded abundant population of the animals found in the deepest part of the ocean.

Proximity to land also played a role in the makeup of the deep-sea environment. Deep in the New Britain Trench, located near Papua New Guinea, Gallo identified palm fronds, leaves, sticks, and coconuts-terrestrial materials known to influence seafloor ecosystems. The Challenger Deep and Ulithi, both more removed from terrestrial influence, were absent of such evidence. Gallo also spotted a dive weight in the Challenger Deep footage, likely used as ballast on another deep-submergence vehicle.

"These data add valued information to our limited understanding of deep-sea and trench biology," said Gallo. "Only a small fraction of the deep seafloor has been fully explored, so this expedition allows us to better understand these unique deep-sea ecosystems."

Gallo and Ralph Pace, a master's student in the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at Scripps, are compiling an image reference collection of all organisms identified during these dives to help expand the scientific impact of the expedition.

"New knowledge about life in the deep sea becomes increasingly important as humans ramp up their exploitation of the fish, energy, mineral, and genetic resources of the deep sea," said Levin. "Natalya's observation of a dive weight from a past expedition in the Challenger Deep reminds us that our presence in the ocean is pervasive."

Gallo noted that her findings were largely consistent with discoveries made in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, the first "golden age" of deep-sea exploration. New high-definition video capabilities used during Deepsea Challenge expand exploration potential by allowing scientists to view organisms in their natural habitat and observe how these unique biological communities function, she said.

"The DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition made possible the discovery of the deepest examples of gigantism known thus far," said Doug Bartlett, a Scripps marine microbiologist and chief scientist of the expedition. "Among the many values of collecting deep-sea samples is the possible isolation of microbes adapted to the extreme conditions of life in the trenches. These microbes inform us of the evolution, diversity, and adaptations of life and perhaps even life's origins and its possible presence elsewhere in the solar system."

Omega-3 lipid emulsions markedly protect brain after stroke in mouse study

Feb. 20, 2013 ? Triglyceride lipid emulsions rich in an omega-3 fatty acid injected within a few hours of an ischemic stroke can decrease the amount of damaged brain tissue by 50 percent or more in mice, reports a new study by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center.

The results suggest that the emulsions may be able to reduce some of the long-term neurological and behavioral problems seen in human survivors of neonatal stroke and possibly of adult stroke, as well. The findings were published in the journal PLoS One.

Currently, clot-busting tPA (recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator) is the only treatment shown to improve recovery from ischemic stroke. If administered soon after stroke onset, the drug can restore blood flow to the brain but may not prevent injured, but potentially salvageable, neurons from dying.

Drugs with neuroprotective qualities that can prevent the death of brain cells damaged by stroke are needed, but even after 30 years of research and more than 1000 agents tested in animals, no neuroprotectant has been found effective in people.

Omega-3 fatty acids may have more potential as neuroprotectants because they affect multiple biochemical processes in the brain that are disturbed by stroke, said the study's senior author, Richard Deckelbaum, MD, director of the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia's College of Physicians & Surgeons. "The findings also may be applicable to other causes of ischemic brain injury in newborns and adults," added co-investigator Vadim S. Ten, MD, PhD, an associate professor of pediatrics from the Department of Pediatrics at Columbia.

The effects of the omega-3 fatty acids include increasing the production of natural neuroprotectants in the brain, reducing inflammation and cell death, and activating genes that may protect brain cells. Omega-3 fatty acids also markedly reduce the release of harmful oxidants into the brain after stroke. "In most clinical trials in the past, the compounds tested affected only one pathway. Omega-3 fatty acids, in contrast, are very bioactive molecules that target multiple mechanisms involved in brain death after stroke," Dr. Deckelbaum said.

The study revealed that an emulsion containing only DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), but not EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), in a triglyceride molecule reduced the area of dead brain tissue by about 50 percent or more even when administered up to two hours after the stroke. Dr. Deckelbaum noted, "Since mice have a much faster metabolism than humans, longer windows of time for therapeutic effect after stroke are likely in humans." Eight weeks after the stroke, much of the "saved" mouse brain tissue was still healthy, and no toxic effects were detected.

Studies are currently under way to test the emulsion in older mice and in mice with different types of stroke. The researchers are also conducting additional studies to identify more precisely how the omega-3 emulsion works and to optimize the emulsion in order to improve functional recovery after stroke.

After animal studies on dosages and timing, and if the emulsions continue to show promising results, Dr. Deckelbaum said, clinical trials could begin quickly, as such emulsions have already been shown to be safe in people. Similar emulsions are used in European ICUs for nutrition support, and in the US they have been found to be safe when tested in babies for their nutritive and anti-inflammatory effects.

The title of the paper is "n-3 Fatty Acid Rich Triglyceride Emulsions are Neuroprotective after Cerebral Hypoxic-Ischemic Injury in Neonatal Mice." The other contributors are Jill J. Williams, Korapat Mayurasakorn, Susan J. Vannucci (Weill Cornell); Christopher Mastropietro (Wayne State); Nicolas G. Bazan (Louisiana State); and Vadim S. Ten CUMC).

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health (RO1 HL040404, RO1 NS056146, and RO1 NS046741).

A U.S. patent application filed by Columbia University and naming RD as an inventor, for the therapeutic use of omega-3 diglyceride emulsions, has been allowed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Sony Formally Announces PlayStation 4, Proclaims the Most ...

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on Wednesday formally introduced its next-generation PlayStation 4 video game console. As expected, the fourth-generation system will hit the market later this year to lead the PlayStation into its third decade. The new console promises to reimagine the video games with a set of new technologies, features and gaming network never-before-seen by the industry.

?Our vision for the future is consumer-centric, developer-inspired, and characterized by an unwavering commitment to phenomenal play experiences. Today we are revealing the genesis of an expanding ?idea? about the future of play ? an idea with enough potential to satisfy the insatiable appetites of our creative community of developers and gamers,? said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Early during the presentation Sony confirmed general technical specifications that have been discussed recently (it appears that almost everything about the PlayStation 4 technology has been leaked well-ahead of the formal introduction). The new console is based on AMD Fusion system-on-chip with multi-core x86 microprocessor (eight-core AMD Jaguar), PC-derivative graphics processing unit (custom AMD Radeon HD core with unified array of 18 AMD GCN-like compute units [1152 stream processors], which collectively generate 1.84TFLOPS of computer power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two), various special-purpose hardware blocks?as well as multi-channel memory controller.

The PS4 will come with 8GB of unified GDDR5 memory sub-system (with 176GB/s bandwidth) for both CPU and GPU as well as large-capacity hard disk drive. Sony PS4 will be equipped with Blu-ray disc drive capable of reading BDs at 6x and DVDs at 8x speeds, USB 3.0 connectivity in addition to a proprietary aux port, Gigabit Ethernet port, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR wireless technology as well as HDMI, optical and analog outputs. The new system will also utilize new DualShock 4 game controller with integrated touchpad as well as better motion sensing thanks to new tracking cameras.

Due to to considerably improved graphics and processing horsepower of the PlayStation 4, game developers will be able to design titles with dramatically improved graphics that will get a huge step closer to photorealistic graphics seen in movies. Owing to multi-core microprocessor with decent performance, software makers are now also able to reproduce accurate physics effects and realistic movements of characters to further bring visual appeal of video games closer to that of movies.

Screenshot from Killzone: Shadow Fall by WWS Guerrilla Games

Sony said that it has worked hard to make the PlayStation 4 platform easy to develop new games for. Numerous creators at the event show said they are extremely enthusiastic about the future of the PlayStation platform. Tens of game designers from all around the world, including big names like 2K, Activision, Blizzard(!), Capcom, Electronic Arts, Konami, Sega, Square Enix, and Ubisoft will support the PlayStation 4 with their titles, loads of which will be available in the launch window (November ?13 ? March ?14).

As expected, the forthcoming PlayStation 4 will be tightly integrated with Gaikai cloud gaming services. Since the PS4 will not have native compatibility with the previous-generation PlayStation games, it will use cloud technologies to stream those titles to the new console. The system will also sport improved cross-platform game-play capabilities that will allow PS Vita and PS4 to better work together. For example, the PlayStation 4 will support remote play on PlayStation Vita out-of-the-box.

At the ?See the Future? event Sony also announced plans to stream video games originally developed for PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation mobile consoles to different devices using PlayStation Cloud services powered by Gaikai. Sony?s vision it to enable PlayStation games on PCs, tablets and smartphones.

Screenshot from Driveclub game from WWS Evolution Studios

?

Sony also showcased the first titles that will be developed for the PlayStation 4 and its advanced hardware and networking capabilities. The Killzone: Shadow Fall and DriveClub games look like advanced PC titles that exist today; although some compromises in terms of graphics are visible, the geometry models and lighting look extremely realistic. New games by Square Enix and Ubisoft for the PlayStation 4 will sport very rich and big interactive worlds in addition to just realistic graphics, something that will make the next generation of games different from the existing titles.?

SCE will announce new details of PS4 and its robust lineup of games from 3rd party developers and publishers, the independent gaming community and SCE Worldwide Studios, as well as further enhancements to the entire PlayStation ecosystem between now and the holiday 2013 launch.?

?The arrival of PS4 is a critical initiative that presents an enormous opportunity to dramatically evolve the game play experience into something far grander than ever imagined. From enhanced social capabilities to intensified power to realizing bigger, better, and more immersive game play, to the evolution of our ecosystem to meet the requirements for a simpler, more adaptive interface, we believe PS4 proves we have more to offer than ever before,? concluded Mr. House.

if every report checks out to be true about the ps4 then it's going to be a power house of a gaming system and end up blowing away the competition. Sony has done a much better job at rep their ps4 capabilities so far then Microsoft has with the 720 and if the reports of the hardware in the ps4 are true then the ps4 is going to have a much more powerful gpu then the 720 will have, which will make those of us that are intuned to graphics with our gameplay a lot more interested in the ps4 then the 720.

The initial rumors were all that the ps4 would have bulldozer, instead they both have jaguar, and the graphics will be determined significantly by the thermal and power envelope each chip is allowed.

show the post

But guess what ck, Intel don't do graphics. And Nvidia solutions were evidently not as good. So stop moaning. It's 2013 in the midst of The Great Recession.

What does intel have anything to do with this conversation? You are so pro amd you have to bring up amd vs intel in every article?

Initial articles claiming the ps4 was higher powered then the future xbox were based on the belief that the ps4 would be based on bulldozer, which is a more powerfull cpu then jaguar. Both will infact be based on jaguar most likely. I have not said anything against the cpu choice of either console, all I have said is that there is a lot less evidence that the PS4 will be significantly more powerfull then the future xbox, since they both appear to use the same cpu, and graphics will most likely be limited more by thermal and power concerns then the architecture / layout chosen.

it's a custom 8 core jaguar cpu. bulldozer cpu's have a high tdp rating. So even though it won't be as powerful as an fx 8350 in terms of multi-threading performance it will be a decent cpu for consoles. As for the gpu that's where the xbox 720 and ps4 will seeprate themselves.the ps4's gpu will be 1.84TFLOPS the xbox 720 gpu will be 768GFLOPS.

There is tight control over the details on the next gen console market. Its the reason why there were varying degrees of rumors. From that alone it should have been obvious not to set expectations as all the rumors are so different.

@Cashkennedy - Please excuse me but after reading your post beginning thread number 2, it seemed you were having a thinly veiled swipe at AMD's top and newest technology that Sony has selected. But certainly, what I would like to convey is that everything is being done to a price at the moment. We are not in the excesses of 1986 or 2006. Design choice will come down essentially to parts cost vs reasonable performance, not how out-rightly kickass it is. In that regard Nintendo, Sony, and MS can all be defended. Am I pro AMD? Unashamedly and on principle. Nevertheless, I try to balance my views. In the end I want the truth to prevail. I certainly don't want a situation like the Emperor's New Clothes. AMD deserves and needs timely criticism when they stuff up. My bugbears are their crap marketing (poor name choices and fragmented products) and poor execution. In regards to this console, it looks like it has the goods. It needs to run as cool as possible as people normally place them inside poorly ventilated cabinets on which TV's sit.

Sony said it so it's official. Maybe the post was prelaunch but what the gaming community is waiting now is what does Microsoft has to answer to this machine. I guess (and has been reported) the new xbox will be very similar with also a Jaguar CPU on it and very similar graphic card. What will differentiate them hardwarewise are other components complementing CPU and GPU that will be tailored to what that company is trying to deliver like the instaplay chip Sony will use : http://www.joystiq.com/20...es-as-theyre-downloading/
which, with all those cores, could be done in software.

Anyways,

Like it has been since the dinosaurs, it will come down to which exclusive content you cant live without. Love Mario? then that Wii U will have to do or else you are SoL.

Yes its childish to not rush out to buy a new product that I already have something better then. Its deffinetly not childish to post comments on forums that people are childish. Children never call people names.

Consoles are about content. No matter what PC you have, you will not be able to play an Uncharted or God of War on any other thing than a Sony machine.

Those games were most likely made on high end pc's using SDK from Sony! There is no reason why those games wouldn't run on way better hardware, It's just that they like to have "exclusive content" to sell that console.
In other words marketing bullshit!

Check this out ozegamer. You can preorder a Sony PS4 at EB Games for $900. They wouldn't know the real price yet so they're obviously covering their bases to the max whilst getting some self-promotion in the media at the same time. Cheeky devils.

http://www.kotaku.com.au/...-guessing-899-australian/

thats a bit hypocritical you say you don't rush out and buy a new product yet you have the most recent top of the line gpu.

@Cashkennedy - now you've read me wrong. I wrote "childish" as in your comment. I didn't call you anything. I only reserve name calling for the former jmlxg and avon hardcore trolls. It's childish because your post drips with sarcasm and I reckon you don't work inside the industry and therefore don't know how and why these design decisions were made based on factors like price, contracts, chip fabrication production, engineering integration, software gaming IDE's, etc. If you do know, please write an article for Xbit to enlighten us. Until then, stop taking cheap shots. There is nothing wrong with the technology being employed inside PS4.

3.?

I'm surprised to see no techies bring up the fact that this an an AMD design. It's not exactly a true 8 core CPU, just 8 integer schedulers (2 int. schedulers x 4 cores) . Even with it being a customized chip for Sony, it doesn't make sense that AMD would have another architecture different from what they've been doing for the past 2 years. Not that it' a big deal, just we should be aware. In the end, i'm disappointed with the specs. 360/ps3 nearly matched 2005 high-end PC specs. At the very least it will allow all developers to utilize DX11 (sry DX10 no love for you) and thus while we'll still be dealing with console ports, at least it will be simpler for developer to spice up there games for PC. If you were in 2005 and saw what the console could pull off today.......

+ expand thread (4 answers) - collapse thread

Nope, I can tell you now, think of it as two Kabinis on the same die, only customized in a grouping that is customer specific. We are taking real 8 Jaguar cores not marketing spin of X x Y = z logic units.

You might be mixing things up with the bulldozer family of chips that share functional units apart from integer blocks.

To get a better idea read this overview here:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/n...r_Micro_Architecture.html

U wish it was bulldozer. It's jaguar which is a beefed up bobcat.

this is inocrrect the custom jaguar apu has 8 true cores the lack of L2 cache allows it to have 8 cores on the die.

Hey Steel, may I know which site reported the "lack of L2" cache on the PS4 jaguar cores?

4.?

Im wondering how the hell the Jaguar cpu's are going to talk to DDR5 memory since no AMD CPU has anything other than a DDR2/DDR3 memory controller. Perhaps theyre pumping data through the GPU over HyperTransport and then to RAM.

In any event, shared fast memory between CPU and GPU is the next big step in compute hardware. Right now the lag to trasfer data from ram to vram kills nearly all benefits of GPGPU programming.

+ expand thread (2 answers) - collapse thread

there is a difference between ddr and GDDR, GDDR5 is based on DDR3 but is optimised for bandwidth and is much wider. so these APU chips will contain a GDDR controller for bout the GPU and CPU.

They have a GDDR5 PHY on die.

The unification is also part of Unified Memory for CPU and GPU by 2013 initiative as part of HSA announced in early 2012.
