Griner leads AP women's preseason All-America team

Brittney Griner keeps piling up the accolades.

The 6-foot-8 Baylor senior became only the third player to be a two-time unanimous choice on The Associated Press' women's basketball preseason All-America team, receiving all 40 votes from a national media panel Tuesday.

Griner joined former UConn star Maya Moore and Duke great Alana Beard in that select club.

"It's definitely an honor. I'm humbled by it, to be a part of that group," Griner said. "That's just awesome."

Griner wasn't the only unanimous choice on the preseason team. Delaware senior Elena Delle Donne and Notre Dame senior Skylar Diggins were also on all 40 ballots. Stanford's Chiney Ogwumike (23 votes), Maryland's Alyssa Thomas (19) and Baylor's Odyssey Sims (19) rounded out the squad. It's the first time there's been a tie for the final spot since the team began in 1995-96.

Only five other players have been unanimous selections ? Courtney Paris, Chamique Holdsclaw, Diana Taurasi, Seimone Augustus and Candace Parker.

Griner and Sims are the sixth set of teammates to be on the preseason team. They helped Baylor go undefeated last season en route to the school's second national championship. The pair have the Lady Bears back at No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25 poll.

"Winning the championship validated without question Griner's impact on the women's game," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. "Did she need that championship to be considered the best player to ever play? I don't think so, but a lot of people do. So now she has that championship, she's still hungry. She liked the way it felt and she wants another one, and I just don't know that we'll ever see the likes of a Brittney Griner again."

Griner is coming off a tremendous season. She averaged 23.2 points, shot nearly 61 percent from the field and blocked five shots a game.

Sims also had a strong year, averaging 14.9 points and 4.4 assists to go along with three steals.

The All-America duo helped Baylor knock off Diggins and Notre Dame in the title game in April. Diggins led the Irish to the past two NCAA championships games and last season helped them to their first regular season Big East championship. She averaged 16.8 points and 5.7 assists while shooting 50 percent from the field.

Diggins, who was on the preseason team last year as well, is the first Irish player ever to make the squad twice.

"It means a lot. We've had a lot of great players come through here," Diggins said. "There are a lot of great players in the country and it's truly an honor to be considered an AP All-American. This is truly a dynamic team we definitely wouldn't lose many games."

Delle Donne became the first player from a non-BCS conference to earn preseason All-America honors since Amanda Wilson (Louisiana Tech) in 1998-99. She led the nation in scoring last season, averaging 28.1 points and helped the Blue Hens to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

"It's an amazing honor to be part of that group and to be mentioned among the great players who are on that list," the 6-foot-5 Delle Donne said. "But it is only the preseason and we all have to prove ourselves and we all have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be."

Diggins won a gold medal this summer with Ogwumike at the 3-on-3 World Championship.

"She's one of my favorite people to play with, she's so athletic, great basketball IQ," Diggins said of her USA basketball teammate. "She's so smart she can play with anybody and is relentless on the boards."

Ogwumike helped Stanford reach its fifth straight Final Four before the Cardinal lost to Baylor in the semifinals. She averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and shot 58 percent from the field. She'll be asked to do more now that her sister, Nneka, who was an All-American last season, graduated.

"I'm very honored to be considered by the voters alongside this extremely talented group of women. I'm looking forward to the new season as my teammates and I grow tighter together and continue to establish our team identity."

Thomas was also supposed to be on that 3-on-3 team, but couldn't play because she was ill this summer. She's fully recovered now and raring to go.

"She's a workhorse, working so hard on the boards," Diggins said of Thomas. "Her offensive rebounding hurts a lot of teams and she does the little things for her team."

Thomas averaged 17.2 points last season to help Maryland reach the NCAA tournament regional finals.

"Preseason honors are great and they show respect for our team and what we did last year. We just want to get the season started and pick up on where we left off."

Griner, Delle Donne, Diggins and Thomas were all on the postseason All-America team. Ogwumike and Sims earned second team honors.

TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 25, 2012) - University of South Florida researchers have identified a genetic biomarker for age-related hearing loss, a major breakthrough in understanding and preventing a condition of aging that affects 30 million Americans and greatly diminishes their quality of life.

In a nine-year study that was a collaboration between USF's Global Center for Hearing & Speech Research and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology, researchers were able to identify the first genetic biomarker for presbycusis. The genetic mutation carried by those who ultimately suffer from age-related hearing loss is linked to speech processing abilities in older people.

Their findings are published in the journal Hearing Research. The study was authored by USF College of Engineering professors Robert Frisina Jr. and Robert Frisina Sr., the founders of the Global Center for Hearing & Speech Research, and David Eddins, a USF associate professor of communication sciences and disorders and chemical and biological engineering.

In collaboration with the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles, the researchers discovered a gene that produces a key protein in the inner ear the cochlea called glutamate receptor metabotropic 7 (GRM7). The GRM7 protein is intimately involved in converting sound into the code of the nervous system, in the cochlea, which is then sent to the parts of the brain used for hearing and speech processing.

Now having identified the gene, the researchers said people can be tested and takes steps earlier in life such as avoiding loud noises, wearing ear protection and avoiding certain medicines known to damage hearing to protect their hearing.

"This gene is the first genetic biomarker for human age related hearing loss, meaning if you had certain configurations of this gene you would know that you are probably going to lose your hearing faster than someone who might have another configuration," said Robert Frisina Jr.

The Frisinas launched their study of genetics' role in hearing loss nine years ago in hopes of identifying the cause of one of the most common forms of permanent hearing loss. Clinically, age-related hearing loss has been defined as a progressive loss of sensitivity to sound, starting at the high frequencies, inability to understand speech, the lengthening of the minimum discernable temporal gap in sounds, and a decrease in the ability to filter out background noise. Researchers now know the causes of presbycusis are likely a combination of multiple environmental and genetic factors.

"Age-related hearing loss is a very prevalent problem in our society. It costs billions of dollars every year to manage and deal with it. It's right up there with heart disease and arthritis as far as being one of the top three chronic medical conditions of the aged," said Robert Frisina Jr.

DNA analyses were conducted and completed at the University of Rochester Medical School and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

The study involved 687 people who underwent three hours of extensive examination of their hearing capabilities, including genetic analyses and testing of speech processing.

Interestingly, the gene mutation played out differently in women than in men, the researchers found. While the variation had a negative impact for men, it did the opposite for women, who actually had better than average hearing in their elder years. That discovery supports a 2006 finding by the Frisina research group that the hormone aldosterone plays a role in hearing capabilities.

Gaps in border controls are related to alien insect invasions in Europe

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? European countries with gaps in border security surrounding agricultural imports have been invaded by the largest number of exotic insect pests, according to research published Oct 24 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Steven Bacon and colleagues from the Swiss Federal Research Station Agroscope ART and the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

Invasive agricultural pests pose growing environmental and economic problems, threatening biodiversity and costing billions of dollars in economic losses annually. Large volumes of cross-border trade increase the risks of invasion, but the lack of metrics to estimate this risk makes control a challenge.

In the new study, the authors combine global data sets of international agricultural trade with the biology and distribution of invasive insect species to create metrics that can be used to evaluate and improve border controls.

According to the study, known insect pests on many agricultural imports may be frequently undetected by European plant protection authorities. The authors suggest that this leaves European imports vulnerable to pests from countries like the USA, Argentina and Brazil, particularly to insects on large scale commodities such as soybeans, coffee and fruits like bananas, grapes and pineapples, which are the least controlled imports.

According to the authors, these metrics could help quantify the link between invasive insects and international trade. "Developing these metrics enables us to evaluate existing border controls in Europe for the first time. Highlighting gaps in border controls, which relate to insect invasions, gives plant protection authorities the tools to improve biosecurity," says Bacon.

Hospital Drug Supplies Could Be Affected By Meningitis Probe

* 12 more meningitis cases bring total to 294
* FDA says Ameridose plant closure could hamper some drug supplies
* Cautions over NECC drugs injected since May 21

Oct 22 (Reuters) - The extended shutdown of a sister company of the pharmacy at the center of the deadly U.S. meningitis outbreak may exacerbate drug shortages for some hospitals and healthcare providers as the number of infection cases neared 300, U.S. health regulators said.
Ameridose, a drug manufacturer owned by the same people who own New England Compounding Center (NECC), has been closed since Oct. 10. It will remain shuttered until Nov. 5 while authorities inspect the plant, at least temporarily cutting off supplies to its customers.
NECC shipped thousands of potentially contaminated vials of a steroid used for injections to treat severe back pain. Some 14,000 patients may have been exposed to the medicine that has so far led to 23 deaths.
Twelve additional fungal meningitis cases were reported on Monday, bringing the total to 294 in 16 states, plus three cases of peripheral joint infection likely linked to the tainted steroid, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No additional deaths were reported.
Nine of the new cases were reported in Michigan, which has reported 63 infections and five deaths. Tennessee has been hardest hit with 69 reported cases and nine deaths.
Two more have been reported in Indiana, and another in Maryland, the CDC said.
All NECC products have been recalled, but no Ameridose products have been linked to meningitis or faced recall. NECC and Ameridose are based in the suburbs of Boston.
On Monday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration provided on its website a list of all customers who received NECC products on or after May 21.
Although only the steroid methylprednisolone has been confirmed as contaminated thus far, the FDA has recommended that healthcare professionals follow-up with any patients who were administered any injectable product shipped by NECC on or after May 21, including drugs for eyes or cardioplegic solution used in open heart surgery. It said patients should remain vigilant for any signs of infection and contact physicians if they are concerned.
Symptoms of fungal meningitis include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, sensitivity to light, slurred speech and changes in mental function.
The FDA posted a statement on its website on Saturday saying the production shutdown of Ameridose might affect supplies of "certain drugs for some health care systems." It said it was working with Ameridose to ensure that its drugs are safe.
The agency directed hospitals and clinics to its drug shortage website for information on the availability of drugs that are in short supply. It did not, however, identify which drugs or healthcare systems were being affected by the lack of Ameridose products.
NECC is being investigated by federal and state authorities to determine if it violated compounding pharmacy regulations by supplying large orders of medicines without matching its drugs to specific prescriptions for patients or treatment regimens. It is also facing a raft of lawsuits connected to the meningitis outbreak.
Although the typical incubation period for contracting fungal meningitis from the tainted steroid is one to four weeks after injection, it can be far longer. Doctors have been cautioned to monitor patients for signs of meningitis for several months after they received injections.
Rapid treatment with a powerful antifungal drug is considered crucial to prevent the infection from spreading to the brain, where it has caused strokes and other damage.
Patients who received injections of NECC drugs prior to May 21 and who have not had infection symptoms are considered to be at less risk because of the time that has elapsed, the FDA said. Patient follow-up was not recommended for those who received non-injected NECC products such as lotions and eye drops, which are considered to be low risk.

Cambodia deports Chinese woman in royal photo row

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia?Cambodia has deported a Chinese woman convicted of desecrating photos of the country?s recently deceased former king in front of enraged factory workers.

National police spokesman Lt. Gen. Kirt Chantharith said Wang Zia Chao left Cambodia on Wednesday to return to China?s Guangdong province.

A Cambodian court on Tuesday gave the garment factory supervisor a one-year suspended jail sentence and fined her 2.5 million riel ($620) for seizing pictures of former King Norodom Sihanouk from workers and destroying them. She had accused the employees of shirking their work.

Tuesday was the end of a week of official mourning for Sihanouk, who died at age 89 in Beijing on October 15. His body was returned to Cambodia on October 17.

So, Does the Military Still Use Bayonets?

Wow, who knew that bayonets were such a touchy subject? Conservative commentators and edged-weapon enthusiasts have leaped to the defence of every rifleman?s favorite sharp pointy thing after President Obama suggested during the presidential debate that there are fewer of them now than during the Civil War days.

During President Obama and Mitt Romney?s final presidential debate, Mr. Obama laid into the trusty weapon:

?We also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military?s changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.?

The official Republican National Committee research department replied to the President by tweeting a link to a page on Marines.com ? which notes that every Marine receives bayonet training in the?Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP)?? accompanied by a photo of a soldier stabbing a pile of tires.

Dan Riker, owner of the Georgia-based military surplus outlet Bayonet, Inc., told TMZ?that bayonets???are still distributed to the military all the time? and that the President?s comment was ?ignorant.?

So does the military actually still use bayonets? Some Marines were quick to defend the weapon on Twitter. But as the Wall Street Journal notes, ?few Marines or soldiers ever use a bayonet and service members on patrol do not equip their rifles with bayonets.??According to the Washington?Post, the U.S. Army?discontinued bayonet instruction?during basic training in 2010.

Indeed, hand-to-hand combat situations are fairly rare in today?s conflicts ? and when they do happen they seldom involve a bayonet. Sgt. Cliff Woolridge, who received the Navy Cross earlier this year for killing a Taliban militant in hand-to-hand combat, did so, as the Journal?noted,?not with a bayonet but with the stock of an AK-47 assault rifle. And in 2010, a Nepalese Gurkha soldier fought off more than a dozen Afghan insurgents simultaneously, brandishing his machine gun tripod after running out of ammunition.

Non-profit coming to Charlotte to aid women business owners - Wbtv

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

At Three Little Birds stationary shop in Charlotte the chirping of the printing press machine is melodically crafting notes.

"The neighborhood where we are located in south end has been really supportive of us and they really helped to keep us in business, " said the stationary shop owner Kristen Stewart.

Five years ago when Stewart started her business these shelves weren't stocked with orders and this machine was not singing at all.

"It's been a rocky road," said Stewart.

"We started right when the economy tanked."

The self starter was new to the business world and says there weren't many resources available to help women.

"Just meeting other women who have been successful in business, learning how they were able to balance work and life, funding sources, and creative ways to market your business," said Stewart.?

Today, there are many more opportunities and support systems to give women a leg up.

For example, Count Me In For Women's Economic Independence, an organization which provides women help with growing their business.

"They got their nose on the grindstone doing their business everyday and they don't necessarily look at their financial and they don't really have a road map for growth," said Neil Merlino, Founder and President of Count Me In for Women's Independence.

And not fall short of their male counterparts.

"We spend a lot of time talking about how to have a bigger vision for your business so that you can in fact?start to attract the kind of people that you need both as customers and investors and as employees or contractors," said Merlino.

With mentoring services geared towards women,?Stewart hopes to keep Three Little Birds nestled in profits.?

Police arrest man after goalkeeper attack

GLOUCESTER, England (AP) -Police have arrested a man on suspicion of assaulting former England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland amid a pitch invasion during a second-tier League Championship match.

Kirkland, who plays for Sheffield Wednesday, was shoved in the face and to the ground by one of many Leeds supporters running amok on the field after their team equalized in Friday's Yorkshire derby match at Hillsborough.

Gloucestershire Police say Sunday a 21-year-old man is in custody and the subject of an investigation being led by a police force in Yorkshire.

The man has been named on social media sites.

The Football Association said Saturday an investigation has been launched into the crowd trouble at the game, which also saw bottles being thrown on to the pitch and offensive chanting from both sets of fans.

Dish Network settles lawsuit with Cablevision, AMC

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dish Network, the nation's third largest pay-TV provider, has settled its four-year old lawsuit filed by Cablevision and AMC Networks over a high-definition programming agreement, according to statements from the companies released on Sunday.

As a result of the settlement, Dish will resume broadcasting AMC's channels.

Voom HD Holdings, then a unit of Cablevision, had sued Dish Network for $2.4 billion in damages alleging it violated a 15-year contract to carry a suite of high-definition channels, including those devoted to Kung Fu and video games. Dish pulled out these channels in 2008.

Voom is now a part of AMC Networks, which Cablevision spun off last year.

Under the deal, Dish will pay a cash settlement of $700 million to Cablevision and AMC, according to a statement from Cablevision. Some $80 million of that cash settlement would be intended for the purchase of Cablevision's wireless spectrum licenses in 45 cities in the United States. Dish said that covers a population of 150 million in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Philadelphia.

Dish and its sister company EchoStar led by billionaire chairman Charlie Ergen have spent several billion dollars on acquiring wireless spectrum. Ergen plans to use the assets to build a mobile network once the U.S. Federal Communications Commission gives it approval.

As part of the settlement, Dish will also enter into a long-term distribution agreement with AMC Networks to carry AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel and WE tv, and with The Madison Square Garden Company to carry Fuse on its satellite service.

Dish, in a statement, said it resumed broadcasting the AMC channel on Sunday, October 21. The AMC channel will be carried on Dish channel 131.

Other AMC Networks programming, including Sundance Channel, WE tv and IFC, will return to Dish on November 1, Dish said. The Madison Square Garden Company's music-oriented Fuse channel will begin broadcast November 1, as well.

"This multi-year deal delivers a fair value for both parties and includes digital expansion opportunities for AMC Networks' programming," said Dave Shull, senior vice president of Programming at Dish.

Dish, then a part of Echostar, owned a 20-percent stake in Voom, but was giving that up to Rainbow Programming Holdings, a unit of Cablevision. Dish, as a result, will not retain any of that $700-million settlement.

Dish in July blacked out AMC's networks for its 14 million subscribers, saying the channels did not generate ratings large enough to justify the licensing fee increases AMC was seeking in a new contract. Dish customers account for 13 percent of AMC's subscriber base.

AMC maintained, however, that Dish dropped its channels to gain negotiating leverage in the Voom case and said the two companies had never discussed a new carriage agreement.
