Why Windows Phone will beat the new Blackberry

The Blackberry 10 and new Blackberry devices took center stage today, but despite Blackberry's best efforts, it will lose out to Windows Phone as the number three smartphone operating system. Despite the improved new hardware, it will be no match for Microsoft and Windows Phone.

There's certainly a lot to like in the new Blackberries. The Blackberry 10 operating system finally brings Blackberry into the modern mobile world, and the new touch-based Z10 Blackberry model looks like a winner, with a solid, high-resolution screen, an integrated view of notes and tasks, and a unified inbox for all communications.

But that still won't help Blackberry beat Windows Phone. The fight between the two platforms is more than just a fight between individual pieces of hardware. It's a fight between entire ecosystems, and that's where Microsoft has the edge, and a very significant one.

To give Blackberry its due, it's starting with an edge over Windows Phone. Gartner reports that in the third quarter of 2012, Blackberry had a 5.3% market share of new smartphone sales, versus a 2.4% for Windows Phone. But that 5.3% is less than half of the 11% Blackberry had a year previously. Windows Phone was up from 1.5% a year previously. So despite a larger market share, the Blackberry trajectory is down, while the Windows Phone trajectory is upwards.

Microsoft has far larger ecosystem than Blackberry, which is why it will become the number three smartphone platform. When I talk about the ecosystem, I don't mean developers. I mean the entire Microsoft ecosystem -- Windows for PCs and tablets, Windows Phone for smartphones, Microsoft Office for all of them, the Xbox gaming system, SkyDrive cloud-based storage...I'll stop here, but the list is a long one. As for Blackberry, it has Blackberry phones, and not much more.

With Windows Phone, you'll be able to tie into the entire Microsoft ecosystem. Read and edit Office documents that you've created on a PC or tablet via SkyDrive and Office. Sync settings and files with other Microsoft devices. Play games remotely on your Xbox. Sync entertainment with PCs, tablets, and the Xbox.

That's simply too much for Blackberry to overcome. The battle these days is among giant ecosystems, not discrete pieces of hardware. The Blackberry doesn't have much of an ecosystem. And so Windows Phone will overcome Blackberry's lead.

Nearby Star Could Host a Baby Solar System

This stuff always amazes me. About 20 years ago when I hung out with astrophysics geeks, we were just on the cusp of being able to be in a position to start identifying exoplanets.

Now we find them all over the place, surrounding stars we never thought would be able to have them. Hell, I think the estimates for the number of planets which would exist was vastly smaller than what we know now.

The universe is far more vast and complex than we've ever guessed... and we just keep finding new stuff. And that's friggin' awesome.

Australian PM surprises with September election call

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard set national elections for September 14, stunning voters on Wednesday with eight months notice of the vote in a bold move designed to end political uncertainty surrounding her struggling minority government.

The election date means Gillard's government will serve a full three-year term, although analysts said the early notice meant she had started an eight-month campaign and lost her ability catch opposition leader Tony Abbott by surprise with a snap early poll.

"She's going for the strategy than an incumbent can wear out a fragile, or potentially fragile, opponent with a long campaign. The idea is for them to punch themselves out," analyst Paul Williams from Griffith University told Reuters.

"In this case, Tony Abbott and the opposition are so well entrenched it will backfire."

Opinion polls show Abbott's opposition Liberal-National party is well ahead of the government and Gillard would be swept from office, losing up to 18 seats, if an election were held now. The government could lose power if it loses just one seat.

The election will decide whether Australia keeps its controversial carbon tax, and a 30 percent tax on coal and iron ore mining profits, which Abbott has promised to scrap it if he wins power.

But apart from these two policy differences, the government and opposition differ little on domestic issues, and both firmly support greater involvement with China, the country's biggest trade partner, and close defense ties with the United States.

The financial markets were unmoved by the announcement. The Australian dollar remained firm, hitting its highest level against the Japanese yen in over four years. The share market reached a fresh 21-month high and government bonds were steady.

Abbott said he was ready to fight the election, adding it would be decided on Gillard's credibility. "This election will be about trust," he said, hinting he will focus on Gillard's broken promise not to introduce a carbon tax and failure to deliver a promised budget surplus this year.

Abbott has successfully eroded government support through his constant negative attacks, but has yet to make any detailed policy announcements. He will make his first major 2013 speech on Thursday.

LITTLE IMPACT ON BUSINESS

Business said it welcomed the early announcement of the election date, but said it would not have much of an impact on certainty given the date fell within the normal election timing.

"Its real value is the knowledge that the last quarter of the year will be uninterrupted by an election," said Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Peter Anderson.

Gillard currently governs with support from a group of independents and the Greens, who all support the September 14 election. That means she has locked in majority support until the election, although a sudden by-election could still change the balance if a lawmaker dies.

Under Australian laws, governments serve for up to three years and the prime minister decides the election date. Gillard said she wanted to end political uncertainty by setting a date.

"It is not right for Australians to be forced into a guessing game, and it's not right for Australians to not face this year with certainty and stability," she said in a speech to the National Press club.

Her speech laid the groundwork for an election year battle focused on the economy, arguing that a strong economy is necessary to ensure fairness in education and disability services -- two key policies aimed at Labor heartland voters.

Gillard said the governor-general would dissolve the current parliament on August 12, giving the government two more sessions of parliament to pass laws and deliver its May budget.

Australia's resource economy is expected to slow this year as a stubbornly high currency crimps export earnings and a boom in mining investment plateaus. Australia's A$1.5 trillion ($1.53 trillion) economy has grown for the past 22 years and has overtaken Spain as the world's 12th largest.

Though the government has dropped its pledge to reach a budget surplus for 2012/13, any deficit is still likely to be a fraction of the economy's A$1.5 trillion in annual economic output and no worry to investors.

"Sin City 2" casts Eva Green and Julia Garner

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" has cast Eva Green as a femme fatale and Julia Garner to portray yet another stripper struggling to make a dime in the gritty comic-book metropolis.

Green ("Casino Royale") will appear in the sequel to the 2005 hit, "Sin City," as a deadly muse named Ava Lord. Garner ("The Perks of Being a Wallflower") plays a stripper who appears in scenes with Johnny, a cocky young gambler played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Like the first film, "A Dame to Kill For" is adapted from Frank Miller's graphic novels.

Miller, who is co-directing with Robert Rodriguez, says Green's character is "every man's most glorious dreams come true, she's also every man's darkest nightmares."

"Ava Lord is one of the most deadly and fascinating residents of 'Sin City.' From the start, we knew that the actor would need to be able to embody the multifaceted characteristics of this femme fatale and we found that in Eva Green," Miller and Rodriguez added in a statement. "We are ecstatic that Eva is joining us."

Green and Garner are newcomers to the sequel, along with Gordon-Levitt, Jaime King, Josh Brolin, Dennis Haysbert, Michael Madsen, Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Ray Liotta, Juno Temple and Jamie Chung.

Returning from the first "Sin City" are Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis and Rosario Dawson.

The sequel is currently filming at Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas and is scheduled for an October 4 theatrical release.

Gun Control Reformers and Firearms Wholesalers Take Aim at Kids

A few weeks ago in Concord, New Hampshire, my 14-year-old sister, Daphne Jordan, attended a gun rights rally. A few hundred people crowded around the grand steps of the State House building, which with its gold dome and neo-classical design is a typically beautiful New England state seat. Daphne had written a speech. When given the chance to address the crowd, my young sister grabbed the rally by the bullhorn.

People cheered wildly at her oratory, according to my father?s slightly biased account. My sister, a still-growing blonde who runs track, is a very well-spoken teenager, it must be said.

?I was simply doing what our Founding Fathers would have wanted me to do,? Daphne told me. ?When I see injustice, it?s my civic duty. When Obama used children to push gun control, I was forced to take action to set the record straight based on our constitution.?

And, evidently, she set that record straight with panache. After her speech to the rally, representatives from New Hampshire?s state legislature?the third largest deliberative body in the world after U.S. Congress and British Parliament, with 400 members?asked Daphne to address a hearing.

After school last Tuesday, Daphne returned to the capital. The conference room reserved for her presentation was overflowing. So they moved to a larger room, which also proved too small. Finally, press, politicians and public moved to the State Assembly building across the street, and Daphne read an expanded version of The Speech.

She started with her take on what she had anticipated a gun rights rally would look like.

My sister and my family are not gun owners. They don?t hunt. But they do not want the federal government further messing with their lives.

?I expected it to be all about hunters and guns,? she said to the crowd. ?I was shocked. They were afraid of the government taking away their freedoms.

?If President Obama wants to take our guns, isn?t he taking away our means to protect our right to freedom?

?So I ask myself, what gun would our Founders want their citizen militia to have today to protect us from a government greedy for power.?I think Thomas Jefferson would recommend a semi-automatic rifle with 50-round clips, and pistols that hold 20. But, I?m sure George Washington would demand these arms."

It?s difficult to know exactly what Jefferson and Washington would think. But as the gun debate reaches Congress this week, it?s important to look at states like New Hampshire?with Libertarian tendencies, a Live Free or Die motto and an advanced political culture?to understand the arguments against further regulation.

New Hampshire has the lowest murder rate in America. In the past decade, the state averaged 10 to 20 murders per year within a population of 1.3 million. Consider this: The city of East St Louis, Illinois, population 27,000, has about the same annual number of murders.

As much as I would like, for the sake of pleasant family dinnertimes, to agree with my sister?s reading of the Constitution, I don?t and I can?t.

A recent TakePart story I wrote about Chicago teen rappers killing one another is an example of why I can?t accept handguns or assault rifles as basic human rights. When I read the 2nd Amendment, I see an outdated provision about muskets. If every man were entitled to the tool of American liberation, we?d all get nukes at birth, right?

But my sister touched on a universal truth by speaking out: ?I learned what it is to be an American citizen, to speak up and tell the truth. You can?t just let your country take your rights. This country was built out of action-orientated people. And I wanted to take action. I was able to exercise my right of free speech. Everyone was 30 years or more older than me, and I?m the voice of a new generation. People think we?re all about Facebook and haircuts or something?but I was there honoring the social contract of citizenship and to let them know our nation won?t die and that someone still understands what it is to be American.?

When asked if the other side is entitled to the same rights of free speech, Daphne agreed, but with a caveat: ?The other side has a right to voice opinion, but not to take our rights. The executive is there to enforce law, the legislature is there is to write them, and the court is there to make sure they?re constitutional. Obama is pushing a political agenda,? she added.?

Later in the week, New Hampshire hit national headlines when its Association of Chiefs of Police announced, of all things, a gun raffle giving out 31 weapons, including a Ruger SR-566C semiautomatic military style rifle. Police giving out assault weapons to raise money for more police is a bit weird, if not fully tone deaf, given the national mood after 20 children and six adults were shot dead at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Then there was a Sunday New York Times cover story detailing the gun industry?s marketing pivot targeted at kids my sister's age and younger.

?Threatened by long-term declining participation in shooting sports,? the Times sums up, ?the firearms industry has poured millions of dollars into a broad campaign to ensure its future by getting guns into the hands of more, and younger, children.?

My sister and my family are not gun owners. They don?t hunt. But they live in a peaceful state, one that is not in debt or suffering from high unemployment. They do not want the federal government further messing with their lives. And it makes sense framed from the ?shire?s endless forest, lakes and mountains. In this glorious New England setting, my sister?s classmates aren?t gunning one another down.

On the streets of Chicago, where guns are killing more than 500 people?half of them children?a year, things are different. There, guns are part of the problem. In New Hampshire, there is no major problem. Both perspectives make sense.

But this American is going to disagree with his sister.

Protecting the Constitution and basic freedom is an important American concern. Protecting human lives is a universal one.

Marco Rubio Evolved on Immigration Reform

Arizona Sen. John McCain partnered with liberal Democrat Ted Kennedy in 2005 to offer illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship, then allied with border security hardliners during a tough 2010 Republican primary. "Complete the danged fence," McCain cracked in a widely publicized television spot.

Loading feed...

Less well known is the equally dramatic pivot by Marco Rubio, from 2010 candidate who dismissed McCain?s proposal as ?amnesty,? to U.S. senator who on Monday championed reforms McCain said had ?very little difference? from his previous plan, which became the blueprint for failed legislation in 2006 and 2007.

During a March 28, 2010 Fox News debate against then-Gov. Charlie Crist, Rubio said: ?He would have voted for the McCain plan. I think that plan is wrong, and the reason I think it?s wrong is that if you grant amnesty, as the governor proposes that we do, in any form, whether it's back of the line or so forth, you will destroy any chance we will ever have of having a legal immigration system that works here in America.?

In a CNN debate on Oct 24, 2010, moderator Candy Crowley asked, ?So your plan is that you're going to close the borders, get the electronic system, fix the legal system, and then do what?" Rubio responded: ?And then you'll have a legal immigration system that works. And you'll have people in this country that are without documents that will be able to return to the -- will be able to leave this country, return to their homeland, and try to re-enter through our system that now functions, a system that makes sense?Earned path to citizenship is basically code for amnesty.?

The legislation Rubio backed Monday requires illegal immigrants to pass a criminal background check, hold down a job, pay fines and back taxes, learn English, and go to the back of the line ? just like previous proposals. ?It is not going to be an easy process, but it's certainly going to be a fair one and a humane one and one that speaks to our nation's legacy, both as a nation of laws, but also as a nation of immigrants,? Rubio said at the Capitol Hill press conference. As details of the new legislation are still emerging, it?s unclear what Rubio sees as the differences between it and past proposals.

What is apparent is that the turnaround by the potential presidential contender reflects a changing political calculus. Rubio went from longshot to rock star in the tea party-dominated 2010 campaign in part by running to the right of the moderate governor. Now, after two years of burnishing his conservative record in the Senate, immigration reform offers one of the nation?s most prominent Hispanic Republicans an opportunity to show leadership and substance as he positions himself for a possible White House bid.

?He took a right turn on immigration but he?s slowly coming back to where I think he?s naturally oriented,? said Marshall Fitz, direction of immigration policy at the liberal Center for American Progress. ?He understands he has to be a player on this issue.?

As Rubio's star power and skills at framing the immigration debate begin to lure conservatives to the table, the potential for a breakthrough in Washington is already overshadowing his previous policy shifts.

As a state lawmaker in 2003 and 2004, he co-sponsored bills to give college tuition breaks to illegal immigrants. As Florida House Speaker in 2008, half a dozen bills that aimed to crack down on illegal immigrants fizzled on his watch.

But during the 2010 campaign, Rubio towed the anti-amnesty line demanded by the conservative base of his party. He even argued the U.S. census should count ?only legal citizens? because including illegal immigrants would ?actually incentivize politicians to perpetuate our broken immigration system by rewarding states with large illegal immigrant populations with a louder voice in Washington.? The statement drew rebukes from fellow Republicans and led Rubio to clarify that only legal residents should be counted.

In Oct. 2011, when Texas Gov. Rick Perry?s advocacy for in-state tuition for illegal immigrants in his own state had, in part, cost him the lead in the Republican primary, Rubio retreated from his previous support for such tuition breaks. ?As a general rule, people in the United States who are here without documentation should not benefit from programs like in-state tuition,?? Rubio said at the time.

Rubio?s approach changed again a few months later when he began touting legal status for illegal immigrants who attend college or join the military, and he criticized members of his own party for using ?harsh and intolerable? rhetoric. ?He put his neck out there,? said Jennifer Korn, executive director of the center-right Hispanic Leadership Network. ?In watching him and seeing how he operates, I think he does things because he believes in them, not because they are politically expedient.?

But at the same time he was promoting an alternative to the DREAM Act, Rubio filed a bill that would make it harder for undocumented workers to claim a child tax credit.

?Frankly it was perplexing,? Fitz said. ?I don?t know if it was an effort to inoculate him from attacks on the right, but it didn?t make any sense to take food off the table from U.S. citizen kids in the name of trying to make life harder for their undocumented parents.?

Rubio never produced DREAM Act legislation, and his level of engagement wasn?t completely clear until two weeks ago, when he outlined his principles in an interview with The Wall Street Journal: tighter border security, temporary work visas for low-skilled workers, more visas for high-skilled workers and an arduous way for illegal immigrants to earn citizenship. That?s roughly the same McCain plan Rubio once said he opposed. ?Yet immigration advocates who have criticized Rubio's policy shifts in the past are holding back as his presence gives new momentum to their longtime goals.

"Politicians do change their positions, for better or worse," said Arturo Vargas, executive director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. "It happened with John McCain, who moved to the right in an election and is now back in the mix, and it's happened with Rubio. People take their journey -- what I am more concerned about is their destination."

Donors pledge $455 million to Mali military push

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? African and Western nations on Tuesday pledged more than $450 million to fund an African-led military force to fight Islamist extremists in Mali.

Britain, meanwhile, announced that it has offered to send up to 200 military officers to help train a West African force in Mali, including up to 40 people that could be sent to Mali as part of an EU training mission of 500 personnel.

At the African Union headquarters in Ethiopia, a top official, Ramtane Lamamra, said nations had pledged $455.5 million for the United Nations-authorized, African-led Support Mission in Mali, or AFISMA. The AU says AFISMA requires an initial budget of $461 million. Additional support needed for Mali's army and the West African bloc known as ECOWAS raises the overall financial need to near $960 million.

African nations like Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Gambia and others lined up with developed countries like the United States, Japan, Germany and the U.K. to pledge funds to the military effort. Among the pledges of assistance:

? The EU pledged 50 million euros ($67 million).

? Germany promised $20 million and a third aircraft to help transport African troops.

? Britain said it will provide a ferry to help transport equipment and French troops and will allow allies like the United States to fly refueling missions from U.K. bases.

? Japan announced $120 million in aid and support to refugees, the Kyodo news agency said.

Johnnie Carson, the State Department's top Africa official, said at the African Union gathering that U.S. assistance for the Mali effort would total $96 million. Carson said that includes $32 million previously pledged and $13 million already spent aiding military efforts.

Germany's foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, said that despite the necessity of the military mission "in the long-term there can only be a political solution" to Mali's problems.

Islamist extremists have controlled much of northern Mali since last April. French forces began an operation earlier this month to dislodge them. A top U.S. State Department official warned on Monday that the military effort could take years to complete.

Achieve New Heights With This Self Improvement Advice - FREE ...

Lots of people can assist you with learning a lot more about yourself. Friends can help you, along with many good teachers and professionals who will explain your feelings plus analyze your thoughts. For more information regarding the fitness equipment take a look at my blogging site. It has further information on the health promotion together with the perfect selling prices on-line so you won't need to take the time trying to find the most effective packages on your own.

Avoid waste too much money on comfort products. As part of your self improvement, clean up your financial matters. Eliminate unnecessary expenses.

When trying to handle depression, focus on your diet and increase your complex carbohydrates. In case your complex carb intake is lower than suggested, your body won't produce enough this. Complex carbs that you can easily consume to raise these levels include fiber rich foods, nuts, raw vegetables and much more.

It is very important know exactly where you presently are, and the direction you would like to go. This will set you on the path of self improvement, and give you a need to do much better. If you can't identify those two points, or can distinguish between them, you will not make any progress within your desire for personal growth.

You should attempt to find and read books that will tell you about personal development. Take the time to read a few books to find new ideas and tips you had not thought of. Be sure that you pick out a book that has been favorably reviewed because a lot of the times, these type of books can be poorly written.

Using a better life often happens because of self-discipline, and keep in mind that the things you wish for others might have an effect on you. You should only be positive in your wishes for others. If you endeavor to be positive about all things, then that positivity will come back to you.

In case self improvement is an important goal in your life, be sure to feed your faith with love. Faith cannot exist without love. It is important to be devoted to yourself. In this way, you could be a living example to those who are around you.

It has been said that listening is no less essential than speaking when it comes to effective conversation. This is particularly true if you are talking about self-development. Listen to your thoughts and learn to recognize your desires. Listening to what you tell yourself will help you know what you need and how to best improve yourself.

When trying to achieve self improvement, failures can dampen and hurt an individual's ego and self esteem. Approach your failures as opportunities to learn. Failure helps you determine what you are good at and exactly what needs improvement. If you view it that way, when you fall short, you should be happy, since you now know more about you.

Usually read from multiple sources on personal development. A good personal development book can provide you with great advice and ideas that may change your life. It is necessary, however , that you select a book that has received good evaluations. There is no policing on the authors of self improvement books, and some of these are sorely lacking in credibility.

In case you experience anxiety in social situations, ask a friend to join you at the movie theater. You will be out and about, but not in a setting that requires a lot of social interaction. This will also help you get used to crowds.

It is important when you are working on your personal development that you know what you plan to do in your life. Creating long-term goals is a necessity, because it can transform your perspective and increase motivation.

Rather than boasting about your myriad medals, trophies, and awards, ask others about some of their proudest moments and most notable achievements. This allows you to discover some of the great things that people around you are capable of accomplishing, which helps you to respect others by providing you insight into their character.

Remember to practice humility. We are each just a tiny little bit of the universe. There never comes a time when there is nothing left for you learn. Learn as much as you can from each person you meet. When you approach situations with an open mind, you will see how much you can learn from others.

As you have seen, helping yourself live a better life is not as scary as it may appear. The benefits of personal development are sometimes intrinsic with psychic rewards, while at other times the benefits are external with financial or material rewards. Making your life better is within your grasp, and there is no better time for you to start than now.

Bipartisan Group Of Senators To Introduce Immigration Plan, Preempt Obama

WASHINGTON -- A bipartisan group of four Democratic senators and four Republican senators will announce the framework for a comprehensive immigration reform plan on Monday, seeking to jump out in front of President Obama's planned Tuesday speech on immigration.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) will join with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) to promote the plan. Senators will unveil their plan (read the full five-page memo below) at a Monday afternoon press conference in Washington.

The senators were expected to make an announcement this week, but after news broke last Thursday that Obama would speak Tuesday in Las Vegas about what he wants in immigration legislation, the lawmakers agreed quickly last Friday to hold the event at the beginning of this week. Both Democratic and Republican senators were eager to go before Obama to try to wrest control of the process from the White House, according to Senate aides.

The group is notable in that it includes leading Senate Democrats like Durbin and Schumer, veteran Republican senators like McCain and Graham, and then Rubio, who was reported to have first joined the bipartisan working group last week, but according to a Rubio aide, was first approached by the others in December and has worked with them since.

"He's met with them several times since then. Our staffs have shared a lot of paper," the aide said, describing the principles as "consistent with everything that Senator Rubio's been talking about."

Durbin and Menendez have been insistent that a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. is a core part of their approach.

"Very clearly, having a pathway to earned legalization is an essential element. And I think that we are largely moving in that direction as an agreement," Menendez said on ABC News' "This Week."

But the bipartisan group has also agreed that before a pathway to citizenship is made available, thresholds must be met on border security and workplace enforcement.

The draft agreement reads: "Once the enforcement measures have been completed, individuals with probationary legal status will be required to go to the back of the line of prospective immigrants, pass an additional background check, pay taxes, learn English and civics, demonstrate a history of work in the United States, and current employment, among other requirements, in order to earn the opportunity to apply for lawful permanent residency. Those individuals who successfully complete these requirements can eventually earn a green card."

The border component will include a commission to verify that the border is secure, made up of governors and attorneys general from border states.

In response to a report in The Hill last week that undocumented immigrants might become eligible for taxpayer-subsidized health care under immigration reform, the Rubio aide also said that the bipartisan group is agreed that undocumented immigrants who might be given a temporary work visa under a new legal framework will not be eligible to receive federal aid.

The draft language backs this up. "Current restrictions preventing non-immigrants from accessing federal public benefits will
also apply to lawful probationary immigrants," it says.

McCain, also appearing on "This Week," said that the group's proposal is "not that much different from what we tried to do in 2007," when then-President George W. Bush tried to push a set of reforms through Congress.

Bush's initiative was met with hostility by the conservative wing of the Republican party, who howled about amnesty and brought the initiative down to defeat.

McCain said that Republican Mitt Romney's loss in the 2012 presidential election, and the fact that McCain in 2008 and Romney in 2012 lost increasingly large numbers of Latino voters, has altered the politics of the immigration debate.

"What's changed is -- honestly, is that there is a new, I think, appreciation on both sides of the aisle -- including maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle -- that we have to enact a comprehensive immigration reform bill," McCain said.

"Look at the last election. Look at the last election," McCain said. "We are losing dramatically the Hispanic vote, which we think should be ours, for a variety of reasons, and we've got to understand that."

In the past, figures like McCain -- who is viewed suspiciously by many conservatives ?- have been unable to convince the GOP base or the media influencers like conservative talk radio that their approach to immigration is not "amnesty."

But Rubio ?- who is the son of Cuban immigrants ?- has had success in ways that other Republicans never have. Just last week he got high praise for his ideas on immigration from talk radio host Mark Levin and Fox News' Lou Dobbs, who both in the past have been outspoken opponents of legalizing undocumented immigrants.

"He's talking intelligently about a rational, effective, humane response to the issue, and the idea's going to be whether the Republican party has the ability, the capacity and the will to put him in a position so that he can represent the party on the issue," Dobbs said.

DVD reviews: Hotel Transylvania neuters Prince of Darkness

DVD releases rated out of five stars

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA

Rating: 2.5 stars

Pity the poor, beleaguered vampire: Not even he can find fresh blood these days. Drained by teen franchises and endless reincarnations, the once mighty night-stalker has become the stuff of kiddie cartoons - such as the kind, doting daddy at the heart of Hotel Transylvania. Adam Sandler lends his vocal talents to this story of a vampire who runs a hotel for monsters, where he can keep his daughter safe from the outside world. Part Heathcliff and part Opera Man, Sandler's shtick doesn't lend anything more than fart jokes to a tired story of father-daughter tension. The kids will find the computer-generated images and top-notch animation seductive, but grown-ups may tire of the dirty-diaper theme and meaningless action sequences. Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Selena Gomez, Molly Shannon and CeeLo Green also star. Special features include Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, Ultra-violet features and more. KM

CORIOLANUS

Rating: 4.5 stars

Shakespeare for our media-hungry, militaristic times. The tragedy of bloodthirsty Roman general Caius Martius, aka Coriolanus, gets transposed to the wartorn Balkans of the 1990s in British actor Ralph Fiennes' directorial debut (he also stars and produced the film, which grew out of his performing the part on the British stage in 2000). It's so fresh, even the 400-year-old dialogue sounds modern. Shot in Serbia, the movie co-stars Vanessa Redgrave (as the ambitious mother) and Brian Cox, both excellent; Gerald Butler is less so; and Jessica Chastain radiates vulnerability. The two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo set from Montreal's Alliance Films comes with a director's commentary and a short making-of. JH

DOWNTON ABBEY, SEASON 3

Rating: 3.5 stars

"Nothing is harder to dramatize than happiness." So remarked Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes last week about the third season of his hit TV series. But he can't be blamed for trying, especially as he tried to spice things up by adding Shirley MacLaine to the cast and - spolier alert! - killing off heir-apparent Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) in the final act. The season's nine episodes aired last fall in Britain and concluded with the usual two-hour special on Christmas Day; now, at the same time as it airs in North America on PBS, the network is also making the season available on home video in your choice of three-disc DVD or Blu-ray set. Extras run over two hours and cover everything from costumes to cricket. JH

TRUST

Rating: 3 stars

A year after his 1989 debut The Unbelievable Truth, New York indie filmmaker Hal Hartley explored a similar theme (teenage girl falls for handsome loner) and employed the same lead actress (Adrienne Shelly) in the dark comedy Trust. It's not for all tastes. As in the work of David Mamet, the deadpan dialogue can sound a bit arch, the mechanical pacing is decidely unsnappy, and the decors are clearly low-budget. But there's a spirit of independence and revolt in the mix that carries the day - and it's poignant to see Shelly immortalized on screen (she was murdered in 2006). Image and sound are vivid on the Olive Blu-ray (also on DVD), and as an extra there's 20 minutes of cast-and-crew interviews shot in 2005. JH

INDISCREET

Rating: 3 stars

This 1958 Technicolor rom-com directed by Stanley Donen (Singin' in the Rain) marked the return of two huge stars, Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman, last seen together in Hitchcock's 1946 spy thriller Notorious. Shot and set in London, its storyline - famous actress has an affair with a married man who turns out to be, in fact, single - was a wink to audiences familiar with Bergman's scandalously adulterous affair with Italian director Roberto Rossellini (they married in 1950). But despite all the fancy costumes - and the surprise of seeing Grant dance a jig at a society ball - the picture is a remarkably tepid affair. No supplements on the Olive DVD or Blu-ray, whose colours are a bit off and image rather soft. JH

BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS

Rating: 4 stars

Swedish filmmaker Fredrik Gertten chronicles his heartbreaking, and often funny, battle with produce giant Dole in this documentary that gets to the very core of the spin machine, and how it warps all notions of "freedom of speech." Alarming, but also human and raw, this is a little movie about a very large, and frequently invisible, issue that defines our everyday reality. More than an issue movie, Gert-ten's narrative makes it personal, and more than a little entertaining. Special features include digital transfer and more. KH

TAI CHI ZERO

Rating: 2.5 stars

A knock-off action movie that borrows from the likes of Tarantino as much as traditional Chinese martial arts movies, Tai Chi Zero is called a "steampunk" action movie as it stars Wushu gold medallist Yuan Xiaochao as a warrior with superpowers seeking to elude a death sentence.

While the whole tone of the movie is firmly tongue in cheek and the comedy seems as important as the acrobatics, the film feels a little too silly to be of sincere interest, despite some raucous action choreographed by veteran Sammo Hung. KH

THE AWAKENING

Rating: 3 stars

Rebecca Hall stars in this rather stylish period thriller that takes place in a boys' school, where a ghost appears to roam the hallways and terrorize its young residents. A crafty piece of suspense with excellent art direction, Hall takes charge of the narrative as a skeptic who suddenly finds herself facing down the unexpected, while everyone around her seems eerily distant. Imelda Staunton and Dominic West co-star in this quiet little piece of creepy. Special features include Dolby, digital transfer.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4

Rating: 1 star

The only scary sound in this fourth instalment of the low-budget horror franchise is the sound of producers scraping the bottom of the barrel. Unoriginal and now entirely derivative, the premise of home-video recordings is getting a little worn around the edges.

The telephone analogy (Redux) - Deborah Elizabeth Finn, Strategist ...

This is another article salvaged from my now-defunct first blog.? (Many thanks are due to the Wayback Machine, which enabled me to retrieve a copy.) It was first published in 2005, well before smart phones were prevalent among non-geeks.?

An inherent flaw in the analogy at the time was that telephones, once installed, caused much less trouble to nonprofit executives than the typical IT infrastructure.?

As we flash forward to 2013, with a culture in which smart phones are not only prevalent but offer functions previously associated with information systems, it?s interesting to reflect on how well the telephone analogy has stood the test of time.?

So many of us, inside and outside of the nonprofit sector, devote an inordinate amount of time looking forward to upgrading our phones, and that?s a shocking change.?

One thing that hasn?t changed enough is the failure of many nonprofit organizations to think through the budgetary and operational implications of acquiring new technologies.

The telephone analogy

Fri 11 Feb 2005 10:52 AM EST

Are you a nonprofit/philanthropic professional who is having trouble making the case that your organization needs to bring its technology infrastructure into the 21st century ? or at least into the 1990s?

Please allow me to acquaint you with the telephone analogy.*

First of all, can you think of a functioning nonprofit/philanthropic organization whose board, chief executive officer, or chief financial officer would ever say?

  • ?? we don?t need to find or raise the money to install telephones or pay our monthly phone bill.?
  • ??we don?t need to dedicate staff time to answering the phone or returning phone calls.?
  • ??we don?t need to orient staff and volunteers about personal use of the phones, about what statements they can make on our behalf to members of the media and the public who call our organization, or about how queries that come into the main switchboard are routed to various departments, or about how swiftly high-priority phone calls are returned.?
  • ??we don?t need to make sure that when donors, stakeholders, constituents, and clients call our main number they can navigate the automated menu of choices.?
  • ??we don?t need to show staff members how to put callers on hold, transfer calls, or check voice-mail now that we have an entirely new phone system.?

Apparently, most mission-based organizations have resigned themselves to the fact that telephone systems are an operational necessity.? Somehow, the leadership finds the money, time, and motivation to meet the organization?s telephony needs.

If only we could get the same kind of tacit assumption in place for every mission-based organization?s technology infrastructure!

I propose two possible strategies, either of which would of course need to be tailored your organization?s culture:

  • Encourage your board, CEO, and CFO to see your technology infrastructure as analogous to your telephone system.
  • Persuade them that your telephone system is an information and communication technology system ? and then encourage them to regard other components of the system (such as computers, networks, and web sites) with the same kind of tacit support and acceptance.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who has tried this strategy ? or developed one that is even more persuasive.

* N.B.:? I need to warn you in advance that all analogies eventually break down, but this is a pretty useful one, especially since a telephone these days really is the front end of an information and communications technology system.

A look at notable deadly nightclub fires

A fire that swept through a crowded nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday and killed more than 230 people appears to be the deadliest in more a decade. Here is a look at some of the biggest nightclub fires in the past century:

? A blaze at the Lame Horse nightclub in Perm, Russia, broke out in December 2009, when an indoor fireworks display ignited a plastic ceiling decorated with branches, killing 152.

? A December 2004 fire killed 194 people at an overcrowded working-class nightclub in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after a flare ignited ceiling foam.

? A nightclub fire in the U.S. state of Rhode Island in 2003 killed 100 people after pyrotechnics used as a stage prop by the 1980s rock band Great White set ablaze cheap soundproofing foam on the walls and ceiling.

?In China's worst nightclub disaster in recent years, a fire blamed on a welding accident tore through a disco in the central city of Luoyang in December 2000, killing 309 people.

?A fire at the Ozone Disco Pub in 1996 in Quezon City, Philippines, killed 162 people, many of them students celebrating the end of the school year.

?In 1977, 165 people perished and more than 200 were injured when the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky, which touted itself as the Showplace of the Nation, burned to the ground.

?A fire killed 492 people at Boston's Cocoanut Grove club in 1942, the deadliest nightclub blaze in U.S. history. The fire led to the enactment of requirements for sprinkler systems and accessible exits with emergency lights not linked to the regular lighting system.

?In 1940, a fire ignited the decorative Spanish moss draping the ceiling of the Rhythm Night Club in Natchez, Mississippi, killing 209 people. Hundreds of patrons ran to the only exit. The windows had been boarded shut to keep unwanted guests from sneaking in.

Leading Democrat: Gun control faces uphill climb

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, to introduce legislation on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition feeding devices. Congressional Democrats are reintroducing legislation to ban assault weapons but the measure faces long odds even after last month's mass school shooting in Newtown, Conn. (AP) ? Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who's leading the push to restore an assault weapon ban, acknowledged on Sunday that the effort faces tough odds to pass Congress and she blamed the nation's largest gun-rights group.

Feinstein, D-Calif., on Thursday introduced a bill that would prohibit 157 specific weapons and ammunition magazines that have more than 10 rounds. The White House and fellow Democrats are skeptical the measure is going anywhere, given lawmakers who are looking toward re-election might fear pro-gun voters and the National Rifle Association.

"This has always been an uphill fight. This has never been easy. This is the hardest of the hard," Feinstein said.

"I think I can get it passed because the American people are very much for it," Feinstein said of the measure that follows a similar measure she championed into law 1994 but expired a decade later.

She acknowledged, however, the NRA's political clout.

"They come after you. They put together large amounts of money to defeat you," Feinstein said.

She also said the group was a pawn of those who make weapons.

"The NRA is venal. ... The NRA has become an institution of gun manufacturers," she said.

The NRA disputed her characterization.

"The NRA is a grass-roots organization. We have more than 4 million dues-paying members and tens of millions of supporters all across this country. Our political power comes from them. Decent and logical people would understand that," spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said.

The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to take up the proposal on Wednesday and hear from the NRA's CEO and senior vice president, Wayne LaPierre. Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords, D-Ariz., who was shot in an assassination attempt, also plans to testify.

Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the GOP vice presidential nominee in 2012, said Congress should focus on the causes of violence and not the weapons alone.

"We need to look beyond just recycling failed policies of the past. ... Let's go beyond just this debate and make sure we get deeper. What's our policy on mental illness? What's going on in our culture that produces this kind of thing? You know, we need to have that kind of a discussion and debate," Ryan said.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., also urged lawmakers to consider mental health issues.

"When I hear some of this conversation, I think that we're looking at symptoms, we're not looking at the root causes," she said. "And I understand the senator's passion for this, but I got to tell you, an assault ban is not the answer to helping keep people safe."

New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who favors the assault weapons ban, expressed skepticism that it would be returned to law.

"It's probably a heavy lift in Congress," he said.

In the wake of the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn. In December, President Barack Obama has pushed to expanded background checks, restoring the assault weapons ban and banning high-capacity ammunition magazines. But members of his own party may thwart his hopes.

Feinstein appeared on CBS' "Face the Nation" and CNN's "State of the Union." Ryan was on NBC's "Meet the Press." Blackburn and Kelly were on CBS.

AP Source: Titans interested in hiring Williams

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Gregg Williams may be a step closer to returning to the NFL after being suspended indefinitely for his role in the Saints' bounty program.

Titans coach Mike Munchak has talked with Williams and is interested in adding him to his Tennessee staff, said a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke Sunday to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the Titans do not discuss personnel moves until they are finalized.

Before the Titans could hire Williams, he must be reinstated by the league. Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him indefinitely for his role in the New Orleans Saints bounty program, and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Sunday the league has not yet addressed Williams' potential reinstatement.

Munchak did not immediately answer a message left by the AP on Sunday. The Titans coach has not talked with the media about his team since the day after the season ended.

How quickly the league considers reinstating Williams may take at least a week with the San Francisco 49ers arriving in New Orleans on Sunday to kick off festivities leading up to the Feb. 3 Super Bowl.

Williams is the only coach or player who has yet to return to the NFL in the wake of the bounty scandal.

Goodell just lifted the suspension for New Orleans coach Sean Payton on Tuesday, nearly two weeks earlier than expected. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended for eight games and assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six. Four current or former Saints players were also suspended after an investigation found the club had a performance pool offering cash rewards for key plays, including big hits. The player suspensions eventually were overturned.

Williams was the Saints defensive coordinator from 2009-11 and was hired by St. Louis in January 2012 by former Titans coach Jeff Fisher before being suspended indefinitely in March 20112. Williams' son, Blake, also was on Fisher's staff as the Rams' linebacker coach ? but his contract was not renewed earlier this month.

Munchak has known Williams since 1990. Munchak was playing for the then-Houston Oilers when Williams became an assistant coach with the team. They also coached together with the Oilers; Munchak oversaw the offensive line starting in 1994 and Williams rose from defensive assistant to coaching special teams, then linebackers and finally defensive coordinator.

Williams left the Titans to become head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 2001 before becoming defensive coordinator with the Washington Redskins from 2004-07. He also was defensive coordinator in Jacksonville in 2008 before being hired by the Saints in 2009.

Williams also has a relationship with Munchak's current defensive coordinator, Jerry Gray. When Williams left for Buffalo, Gray went with him and served as Williams' defensive coordinator with the Bills.

Even though Gray currently has the job, the Titans' defense needs help and Munchak will be coaching for his job in 2013 after going 6-10 in his second season as head coach. One reason for the losing record was Tennessee's inability to stop anyone; the Titans set a franchise record allowing 471 points in 2012. The only change Munchak has made to his defensive staff was letting linebackers coach Frank Bush go and moving Chet Paralavecchio into the job from assisting with special teams.

In Williams' last season with the Titans, Tennessee ranked first in the NFL in fewest yards allowed, first in passing yards allowed and third in rushing defense. The Titans also set a franchise-record for fewest points allowed with 191 with an aggressive defense.

Syrian militias target civilians in Homs, opposition says

AMMAN (Reuters) - More than 20 people were killed in the Syrian city of Homs on Saturday, a doctor said, as fighting raged around a road junction on a supply line to government forces in the interior of the country.

The opposition accuses shabbiha militia loyal to President Bashar al-Assad of killing some 200 Sunni Muslim civilians in Homs in massacres over the last two weeks, but a Syrian ban on most independent media makes such reports difficult to verify.

In a video statement from a makeshift hospital in the city, Mohammad Mohammad, a doctor who has been treating the wounded underground for months, displayed the bodies of five people whose remains had been charred to unrecognizable bits.

"They are the Uzam family. The father, mother and three children - the shabbiha burnt them completely, as part of the annihilation the regime is bringing on the area of Jobar-Kfar Aaya," Mohammad said, referring to districts of Homs.

"We are here surrounded. We have more than 20 dead today. They have been documented by name." He said the victims had died in fighting, bombardment and summary executions.

At least 60,000 people have been killed in Syria's civil war. Mostly Sunni Homs, a commercial and agricultural hub 140 km (90 miles) north of Damascus, has been at the heart of the 22-month uprising against Assad.

Syrian authorities have not commented on the latest fighting in the city. In the past, official media have described army operations as designed to ?cleanse' Homs from what they described as terrorists.

'ETHNIC CLEANSING'

Speaking from Istanbul after visiting Homs, Mohammad Mroueh, a member of the Higher Leadership Council of the Syrian Revolution, told Reuters: "The rebels are holding their ground but the shabbiha are getting to the civilians.

"It's hard to describe what's happening in terms other than ethnic cleansing of Sunni districts in the way of Alawite supply lines," said Mroueh, who was in Homs earlier this week.

The Alawites, who follow an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam and comprise about 10 percent of the population, have dominated Syria's power structure and its security apparatus since the 1960s. Assad and most of the ruling elite are Alawites.

A highway that passes near Homs has been used to supply Alawite forces deployed on hilltops in Damascus from bases in the coastal cities of Tartous and Latakia, which have a sizeable Alawite population, according to opposition sources.

Sunnis fear that the city could become part of an Alawite enclave stretching to the coast, where major military bases are located, if Assad was forced to leave Damascus.

"The massacres are increasing and Bashar al-Assad has began to draw borders of this mini-state and associate the Alawites more with blood so that they have no other option but to join him," wrote opposition campaigner Fawaz Tello in an article published on All4Syria news website.

Syria's conflict has grown more sectarian, deepening the Sunni-Shi'ite divide in the Middle East which burst into the open when Shi'ites gained political ascendancy in Iraq following the 2003 U.S. led invasion that deposed Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein.

A statement by an insurgent group, the Syrian Revolution against Bashar al-Assad, said neighborhoods of southern and western Homs were being hit with battlefield artillery and barrages from rocket launchers.

Activists in Homs said at least 120 civilians and 40 opposition fighters had been killed in the past week and that rebels from the nearby town of Qusair on the border with Lebanon were trying to relieve pressure on the western neighborhoods.

The armed opposition has been weakened in the city after a drop in ammunition supplies in recent weeks and after Assad's forces tightened a siege on western areas, according to opposition sources.

A counter-offensive by rebels two days ago in the western sector pushed back Assad's forces slightly, but they continued to pound the area with artillery and from the air, the sources said.

Parker gets cut, returns to lead Spurs past Mavs

DALLAS (AP) ? Tony Parker writhed in pain alone under the basket, his hand covering the same left eye that was seriously injured last summer when the San Antonio guard was a bystander in a bottle-throwing melee at a nightclub.

He stayed down the entire 20 seconds of a Dallas possession on the other end because no foul was called, and he had to be pulled away from the referees as he was led to the bench.

It turned out to be a cut above the eye that required three stitches, and Parker came back after missing a quarter to lead seven Spurs in double figures with 23 points in a 113-107 victory against the Mavericks on Friday night, San Antonio's seventh straight win.

"I was a little bit mad, obviously, but I just told the doc to hurry up and get the stitches in and get back on the court," Parker said.

The Spurs star said he didn't flash back to the June incident at a New York club, when tiny shards of glass embedded in his cornea and doctors told him he was millimeters away from losing the eye.

"Because it wasn't my eye," he said.

San Antonio didn't need Tim Duncan, who stayed home with a sore right knee, because DeJuan Blair had a season-high 22 points, including 17 on 8-of-9 shooting in the first half. Tiago Splitter, normally paired with Duncan in the starting lineup, had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

"I think this group has shown that ability to if somebody is down then somebody else is going to step up," said Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer, filling in ? and winning ? a second time for the ill Gregg Popovich. "They all have a lot of confidence, and they know we have confidence in them."

The Mavericks, who trailed by double digits for large portions of the game after two blowout losses to San Antonio, made it interesting only after Parker left with 1:02 remaining. Dallas cut a 15-point deficit to four with mostly reserves on the floor in the final minute, but Nando De Colo hit two free throws with 2.2 seconds left to end the threat.

Rodrigue Beaubois led the Mavericks with a season-high 19 points.

Parker's head collided with Elton Brand's arm on a drive early in the first quarter, and he angrily complained about drawing blood without getting the call.

The Spurs, who also played most of the game with Manu Ginobili on the bench, went up by 11 early without Parker. Blair, Boris Diaw and Gary Neal had eight points apiece, and Neal had a four-point play when he hit a 3-pointer from the wing as he was getting bumped by Darren Collison.

"When the big dogs go out, you've got to step up," Blair said. "You can't put your head down and worry about what could have happened."

Blair repeatedly got uncontested shots at the rim off pick-and-rolls and hit a couple of nifty running bank shots, including one when Neal jumped and couldn't find anywhere to throw the ball before sliding a bounce pass to Blair just before coming back down.

"It's hard to overcome layup after layup, and that's what happened," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said.

When he returned early in the second quarter, Parker hit three straight shots and finished the half with 10 points. For the game, he added 10 assists and four rebounds.

The Spurs took control with a 21-6 run in the third quarter, capped by a Dallas turnover when a pass from Collison went through O.J. Mayo's legs and led to a fast break that ended with Diaw throwing a behind-the-back bounce pass to Splitter for a layup and a 74-49 San Antonio lead.

"They execute so well on offense and they make you pay and they do a good job of exploiting however your defense plays," said Vince Carter, who had 17 points for Dallas. "We just didn't adjust well enough tonight."

Dirk Nowitzki, who debuted a month ago in a 38-point loss at San Antonio after a 27-game absence following right knee surgery, had 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Mayo, the team's biggest 3-point threat, finished with 14 but missed all four from long range.

The Mavericks got within 10 with 4 minutes left during a strange sequence that resulted in a technical foul against Carlisle even though officials reversed the call that caused him to complain.

Vince Carter tipped in a miss, but Courtney Kirkland called goaltending. Carlisle argued and was given the technical by Eli Roe. The Spurs still got the free throw even after Carter was awarded the basket when Kirkland consulted with the crew. The Dallas deficit was briefly 10 before Neal hit the free throw and Parker drove for the back-to-back layups and a 105-90 lead.

NOTES: Budenholzer said there weren't any health problems with Ginobili, who didn't play in the second half and was scoreless on 0-of-2 shooting in just 8 minutes. "We just decided to keep him out and keep him healthy," Budenholzer said. ... Brand played in his 899th game and made his 14th start for Dallas. His last start was Dec. 6 at Phoenix.
