(AP) ? Parents are reporting more skin and food allergies in their children, a big government survey found.

Experts aren't sure what's behind the increase. Could it be that children are growing up in households so clean that it leaves them more sensitive to things that can trigger allergies? Or are mom and dad paying closer attention to rashes and reactions, and more likely to call it an allergy?

"We don't really have the answer," said Dr. Lara Akinbami of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the senior author of the new report released Thursday.

The CDC survey suggests that about 1 in 20 U.S. children have food allergies. That's a 50 percent increase from the late 1990s. For eczema and other skin allergies, it's 1 in 8 children, an increase of 69 percent. It found no increase, however, in hay fever or other respiratory allergies.

Already familiar with the trend in food allergies are school nurses, who have grown busier with allergy-related duties, like banishing peanuts at school parties or stocking emergency allergy medicine.

Sally Schoessler started as school nurse in 1992 in New York state, and didn't encounter a child with a food allergy for a few years. But by the time she left school nursing in 2005, "there were children in the majority of classrooms" with the disorder, said Schoessler, who now works at the National Association of School Nurses in Silver Spring, Md.

Food allergies tend to be most feared; severe cases may cause anaphylactic shock or even death from eating, say, a peanut. But many food allergies are milder and something children grow out of. Skin conditions like eczema, too, can be mild and temporary.

It's been difficult getting exact numbers for children's allergies, and the new report isn't precise. It uses annual surveys of thousands of adults interviewed in person. The report compares answers from 1997-1999 to those from 2009-2011.

Parents were asked if ? in the previous year ? their child had any kind of food or digestive allergy, any eczema or skin allergy, or any kind of respiratory allergy like hay fever.

The researchers did not ask if a doctor had made the diagnosis or check medical records. So some parents may have been stating a personal opinion, and not necessarily a correct one.

"We see a lot of kids in clinic that really aren't" allergic to the foods their parents worry about, said Dr. Morton Galina, a pediatric allergist at Atlanta's Emory School of Medicine.

For example, hives are sometimes blamed on a certain food when a virus was the actual cause, he added.

But experts also said they believe there is a real ? and unexplained ? increase going on, too.

One of the more popular theories is "the hygiene hypothesis," which says that exposure to germs and parasites in early childhood somehow prevents the body from developing certain allergies.

The hypothesis argues that there is a downside to America's culture of disinfection and overuse of antibiotics. The argument has been bolstered by a range of laboratory and observational studies, including some that have found lower rates of eczema and food allergies in foreign-born children in the U.S.

There could be other explanations, though. Big cities have higher childhood allergy rates, so maybe some air pollutant is the unrecognized trigger, said Dr. Peter Lio, a Northwestern University pediatric dermatologist who specializes in eczema.

Some suspect the change has something to do with the evolution in how foods are grown and produced, like the crossbreeding of wheat or the use of antibiotics in cattle. But Lio said tests haven't supported that.

Emory's Galina said the new CDC statistics may reflect a recent "sea change" in the recommendations for when young children should first eat certain foods.

In families with a history of eczema or food allergies, parents were advised to wait for years before introducing their young children to foods tied to severe allergies, like peanuts, milks and eggs. But professional associations changed that advice a few years ago after research suggested that allergies were more likely in those kids when the foods were delayed.

The old advice "was exactly the wrong thing to do," and could have contributed to some of the increased cases, Galina said.

The CDC report also found:

? Food and respiratory allergies are more common in higher-income families than the poor,

? Eczema and skin allergies are most common among the poor.

? More black children have the skin problems, 17 percent, compared to 12 percent of white children and about 10 percent of Hispanic children.

The mother of a 13-year-old girl, who is black, runs an eczema support group in suburban Washington, D.C. Renee Dantzler says roughly half the families in her group are African-American. Eczema is an itchy skin condition, which often occurs on the arms or behind the knees. The cause isn't always clear.

Her daughter, Jasmine, started getting rashes at 6 months and got much worse when she was 4.

"Her whole body would flare. If she ate something, you would kind of hold your breath," Dantzler said. "And she's allergic to every grass and tree God made."

Her daughter took to wearing long sleeves and pants, even in hot weather, so people wouldn't see her skin scarred ? and whitened in spots ? from scratching. She began to improve about four years ago with steroid creams and other treatments and has gradually become less self-conscious about her skin, Dantzler said.

She's now on a school track team, which means wearing shorts.

"She's the only one on the team with long socks," her mom said.

Barret Jackman Goal: Blues Score In Final Minute To Beat Kings, Take 2-0 Series Lead (VIDEO)

ST. LOUIS ? For the second straight time, the St. Louis Blues stunned the goalie that stoned everyone last spring.

Barret Jackman said his eyes were closed when his first career playoff goal sailed past Jonathan Quick and into the net with 50.6 seconds to go in a 2-1 victory Thursday night. It gave the Blues a 2-0 series lead against the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings.

"He probably didn't think I was going to shoot, the way my hands are," Jackman said. "The building erupted and it's a pretty good feeling."

Quick knows he's to blame for the Kings' predicament. He was often spectacular in Game 1, but spoiled it with a stickhandling gaffe that led to Alex Steen's short-handed overtime goal. Quick thought he'd glove the puck on Jackman's innocent-appearing wrist shot.

"I've got to stop that. I've got to stop that," said Quick, the 2012 Conn Smythe Trophy recipient. "It's my fault. Two games in a row. I've got to be better."

Jackman, a rugged, stay-at-home type who totaled three goals and 12 points in the regular season, joined a rush and scored off a pass from Chris Stewart.

"A great little floater he sent to the net," said teammate Patrik Berglund, who tied it earlier in the third period. "A great screen so he couldn't see it."

Berglund's deflection tied it early in the third period for St. Louis, which was swept by the Kings in the second round last season while getting outscored 15-6.

"We stole one there," said forward David Perron, who assisted on the first goal. "The biggest thing is to come back as soon as we can to Earth and get ready for Game 3."

Dustin Brown scored for the Kings, who'll try to rebound in Game 3 Saturday night.

"It's our own fault that we're in this position," defenseman Drew Doughty said. "We've been fully prepared for their game, fully prepared for what they're going to do against us, and we just haven't stepped up to the plate.

"Tonight was a better effort, but we were only good for two periods."

The Kings led 3-0 in every playoff series last year and are down 2-0 in a playoff series for the first time since 2002, when they lost in seven games to Colorado.

"It's four games to win a series, so we've just got to focus on the next one," Brown said. "We've got to take care of our home ice. That's it."

The Blues responded after coach Ken Hitchcock called a timeout with just under three minutes remaining. They have won eight in a row at home, allowing one goal in all eight games.

Brown lost his edge on a drive to the net and barreled into Brian Elliott midway in the third period, leaving both players shaken up a bit. Brown recovered quickly enough to stay on for the ensuing faceoff.

Berglund tied it at 3:44 of the third with his fourth career playoff goal, charging the net and having a rebound go off his skate and past Quick. He was skidding to a stop when Quick poke-checked a wrist shot by Alex Pietrangelo and it took less than a minute for the goal to be upheld on video review.

Jaden Schwartz lured Quick out of the net on a break-in a little over a minute later, but didn't get off a shot.

Quick was bent over in pain for several seconds during warm-ups after stopping a shot, then left the ice early. The goalie also spent most of the national anthem bent over as if he were an NFL offensive lineman, but then busily went to work scratching the crease with no evidence he was hurt.

Elliott was not made available to media after the game, leading to speculation he was injured, but Hitchcock said, "He's fine, no problem."

The Kings got off to a much better start in Game 2, carrying the play most of the first period. They needed just 6 seconds to convert on a 5-on-3 advantage for their first lead of the series, with Jackman whistled for interference on the heels of a high-sticking call on Ryan Reaves.

LA's strong play carried over to the second period, with Quick making a nice glove save against Steen on the Blues' lone shot on two power plays; Steen scored the Game 1 winner in overtime.

The Kings threatened on break-ins by Brown and Justin Williams. Brown, among the league leaders with eight power-play goals, then deflected Brad Richards' high wrist shot from the slot and the puck dropped to ice level and slid between Elliott's pads at 9:55. Richards had two goals and three assists during the Kings' three-game sweep of St. Louis in the regular season.

NOTES: Blues penalty killers had to stop just two chances in Game 1, although it would have been three if Steen hadn't pickpocketed Quick for the NHL's first short-handed winner in overtime since Fernando Pisani of Edmonton against Carolina in the 2006 Cup finals, and the first in franchise history. ... Blues did not sell out either of the first two games, with attendance of 18,681 for Game 2 about 1,000 shy of capacity. ... Brett Hull, the Blues' career leading goal scorer, was introduced to a huge ovation late in the second period.

'Somebody, somewhere knows something': Family of slain Ga. college student tortured by cold trail

Rebecca Foley, 21, was shot and killed while driving her car near her Savannah, Ga. apartment on Jan. 21, 2013. The case remains unsolved.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

It's been four months since a hard-working Georgia college student named Rebecca Foley was shot to death in her prized red Volkswagen Beetle as she drove up to her well-manicured condo development.

The case was front-page news in Savannah, and Foley's death was highlighted in an NBC News investigation of gun deaths across the country over the long Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in January.

The attention did not help police crack the case, though, and now Foley's family has jacked up a reward in hopes of shaking loose some leads.

"Somebody, somewhere knows something," said the victim's father, Eddie Foley, who added $10,000 to the reward money for information leading to an arrest and conviction. "I don't want it to become a cold case and I feel like that's what it's becoming."

On the evening of Jan. 21, his 21-year-old daughter was found slumped over her steering wheel, dead from a single bullet that left a hole in the rear window. She had just gotten her nails done and planned to meet a friend at home.

Those who knew Foley described her as a striver with a bright future, a pretty young woman who juggled several jobs to put herself through college and hoped to go into the insurance industry.

Her family thought she must have been the victim of mistaken identity, a gang shootout, or a robbery gone wrong. They assumed a witness or a suspect would soon surface, but weeks have turned to months with no arrest.

Foley's parents, who are divorced, made a public appeal with police in March. Her father traveled from his home in Gastonia, N.C., to Savannah last weekend to spend two days papering the city with fliers.

The?Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department said there is no progress to report.

"There's no closure. We're not able to move on," said Foley's mother, Jennifer, who considered and then decided against hiring a private investigator.

She said she has joined a bereavement group and is seeing a therapist, her grief compounded by uncertainty.

"I feel this incredible, overwhelming sense of helplessness. It feels like nobody cares," she said.

O.C. Welch cares. The Savannah-based car dealer, who has offered rewards in several other unsolved homicides, kicked in $2,500 for the Foley investigation. Along with the standard $2,500 offered by Crimestoppers, that brings the total to $12,500.

"Never met 'em," Welch said of the Foleys. "Don't need to know 'em. Just trying to help. Ain't that what you're supposed to do?"

Eddie Foley said he's hopeful the cash will yield some clues ? and some peace of mind.

"I can't bring my daughter back, but it's very important we bring justice and get this person locked up," he said.

Family and friends remember 21-year-old shooting victim Rebecca Foley, a student at Savannah State University in Georgia, and grapple with her loss.

GOP senator wants info on student in Boston case

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A top Republican senator asked the Obama administration Thursday to explain how a student from Kazakhstan charged with trying to help get rid of evidence for one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects managed to enter the country without a valid student visa.

In a three-page letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, asked for additional details about the student visa applications for Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev, the college roommates from Kazakhstan charged with obstruction of justice in the April 15 bombings, and how Tazhayakov was allowed to re-enter the United States in January.

Tazhayakov, Kadyrbayev, both 19, and a third student ? all friends and classmates of bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev ? were arrested Wednesday in Massachusetts. They were accused of helping after the attacks to remove a laptop and backpack from the Tsarnaev's dormitory room before the FBI searched it. Robel Phillipos, 19, was arrested and charged with willfully making materially false statements to federal law enforcement officials during a terrorism investigation.

The disclosure that Tazhayakov was allowed into the country without a valid visa was another instance of possible lapses by the U.S. government in the months before the bombings. Earlier this week the Obama administration announced an internal review of how sensitive information was shared among law enforcement and intelligence agencies and whether the government could have prevented or disrupted the attack. Republican lawmakers have promised oversight hearings, the first of which is scheduled next week.

Tazhayakov was a student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth when he left the country in December. In early January, his student visa status was terminated because he was academically dismissed by the university.

A federal law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the information about Tazhayakov's status was in the Homeland Security Department's Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, called SEVIS, when he arrived in January. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the student's immigration history.

Peter Boogaard, a DHS spokesman, said Wednesday that when Tazhayakov arrived in January Customs and Border Protection had not been alerted that he was no longer a student. Boogaard said the department was working on a fix to the student visa system that will ensure that CBP has access to all relevant student visa information.

Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has asked the department to answer nine questions about what happened in this case, including what information CBP had access to and what safeguards are in place to ensure foreign students are complying with visa rules.

"These clear gaps in our current immigration system are particularly troubling at a time when the committee is considering a proposal for comprehensive immigration reform," Grassley wrote.

None of them have been connected to the pre-bombing planning or the detonation of the bombs that?killed three people?and injured more than 260 others near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15.

One of the suspects is American Robel Phillipos, 19, of Cambridge, according to The Boston Globe.

The other two suspects are identified Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev, 19, of Kazakhstan. They?will be?charged with conspiring to obstruct justice and making false statements to law enforcement.

According to the?criminal complaint, the two destroyed a laptop and fireworks belonging to?Tsarnaev and then lying about it.

Here's what we know about the two Kazachs:

  • The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth?told th AP?that?Tazhayakov is enrolled while?Kadyrbayev was last a student in the fall but is no longer enrolled.
  • A Boston attorney who represented the men?told the AP that they were detained on April 20?on allegations that they violated their student visas.
  • The attorney?confirmed the suspects now face separate federal charges and have a?federal?court appearance related to the bombing case at 3:30 in Courtroom 19.
  • A lawyer who was briefed on the case told ABC that the charges arose after?Tsarnaev, 19,?asked his friends to dispose of a backpack full of fireworks in his dorm room?sometime after the bombings.?
  • Others say they grabbed a computer from his room. Last week officials were searching landfills near?UMass Dartmouth for one of the Tsarnaevs' laptops.
  • The two men lived at an off-campus apartment in New Bedford, about 60 miles south of Boston.?The police?raided?an off-campus house in New Bedford?on April 19.
  • Kadyrbayev's?license plate?says "Terrorista #1."?His lawyers said it was a joke.
  • Here is what appears to be?Kadyrbayev's Vkontakte (VK)?social media page and Facebook page.
  • Journalist Laura Rosen?notes?that?Kadyrbayev?"at least seems to have lied on his VK page that he's an MIT student, he's not, never was registered."
  • Attorney Robert Stahl told CBS that they were drawn to Tsarnaev because he also spoke Russian. (The Tsarnaev brothers lived in Kyrgyzstan, which neighbors Kazakhstan.)

Here's a photo showing Kadyrbayev being detained:

Tyler, The Creator's Mountain Dew Goat Ad - Business Insider

    YouTube

    Felicia, The Mountain Dew Goat

When Mountain Dew?released its first "Felicia the Goat" commercial back on March 20, PepsiCo thought it had a good thing going. The spot is bizarre: An angry caprine (voiced by rapper Tyler, The Creator) beats up a waitress after she fails to give him enough fluorescent green soda.

The ad press loved it: Adweek immediately said, "Mountain Dew makes the best ad ever with a violent talking goat," and eagerly awaited Tyler's next "nasty goat" installment in the three-part series.

The second video was posted on April 8, and it showed Felicia escaping the cops after getting pulled over for a "DewUI."

On the 24th, Tyler's hip hop collective Odd Future posted the last part of the trilogy,?asking, "Will Felicia get caught by the waitress he attacked in the first commercial?"

The goat is shown in a lineup with five black men and viewers can hear Tyler's voice intimidating the injured, terrified waitress,?"Snitches get stitches, foo," and?"Keep ya mouth shut, I'm going to get out of here and Dew you up!" She runs out, near tears. (You can watch all the ads below.)

Things looked alright for Mountain Dew for a couple days. Tyler angrily responded to some confusion as to who the woman in the last ad was:

    ?

But the press was neutral. Tyler tweeted out "Da Goat" with a Youtube link to his 1.6 million-plus followers, and the mission seemed accomplished.

Then on May 1, finance scholar Dr. Boyce Watkins wrote an article titled, "Mountain Dew Releases Arguably the Most Racist Commercial in History" that went viral, and PepsiCo found itself in the midst of a PR meltdown it probably should have seen coming.

    Damage Control

Watkins wrote a scathing review of the "racist" elements in the ad:

"Of course, in the world of Mountain Dew, every single suspect is black. Not just regular black people, but the kinds of ratchety negroes you might find in the middle of any hip-hop minstrel show. Mountain Dew has set a new low for corporate racism. Their decision to lean on well-known racial stereotypes is beyond disgusting. This doesn't even include the fact that the company has put black men on par with animals."

Watkins fears, "Even worse is that Mountain Dew probably thinks this ad is acceptable because they got the OK from a black man."

Headlines about racism spread to almost every major media outlet across the country. Mountain Dew was also harshly criticized normalizing and downplaying violence against women ? disturbingly trying to turn intimidating the abused into a joke.

In crisis mode, Mountain Dew quickly issued the statement:?"We apologize for this video and take full responsibility.? We have removed it from all Mountain Dew channels and Tyler is removing it from his channels as well."

But when Business Insider asked if they planned on having Tyler, The Creator apologize, a rep declined to comment.

Although Tyler hasn't personally addressed the issue head on, he has written a few tweets brushing on the topic that have been defensive and unapologetic.

    Twitter

He even seems to enjoy the media attention.

    Twitter

Without fully saying sorry, Tyler's manager Christian Clancy posted on his Tumblr, "It was never Tyler's intention to offend however offense is personal and valid to anyone who is offended."

Even though Mountain Dew said it was only removing the final video, it removed the others as well.

When trying to play the second video on Odd Future's blog, a message comes up that reads: "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by PepsiCo."

But it's impossible to erase a video from the internet, so some are still available on rogue YouTube accounts.

    How It Happened

The real question everyone is asking is how on earth this ad got approved in the first place.

PepsiCo spokesperson Jen Ryan said that Tyler had "final approval" over the ad but did not know the details of PepsiCo's involvement. The ad was never intended to run on TV." (The first commercial did air on television.)

But even if Mountain Dew did give Tyler free reign, it definitely knew what to expect.

    YouTube Screengrab

Tyler, the Creator triumphantly explaining pitching his concept to Mountain Dew.

Rap Radar posted a video on April 29, after the last ad was released but before the controversy spread, in which Tyler explained to a crowded audience (including Mountain Dew reps) how the soda company approached him to tap into his creative talent and loved his concept.

He excitedly recalled the pitch:?"Alright, it's a f***ing goat, right? It's a goat and he's going to drink the f***ing Mountain Dew, and he's gonna yell at the lady, and the cops are going to pull him over, and then he's going to be in jail and then he gonna do PCP."

Tyler admitted that he didn't think that Mountain Dew would love "some stupid idea I come up with five minutes before the meeting ...?I'm so used to people saying, 'That's f***ing retarded, and I'm looking at Clancy like, 'Yo are they serious' and they actually?liked?it."

Mountain Dew was was him when he went to the Valley in LA to look at goats.

    Why It Happened

Adweek reckons that the fiasco is a sign of how "brands desperately want street cred."

    Mountain Dew Commercial, Screengrab

Another shot from the pulled commercial.

A Bloomberg article from April 2012 noted PepsiCo's explicit attempts to "bring urban cool to [the] Mountain Dew image."?While it had a handle on cities like Nebraska and Kentucky, Mountain Dew was aiming to target a younger and more diverse audience in New York, LA, Miami, and New Orleans.

?It?s been a matter of messaging,? VP of marketing Brett O?Brien told Bloomberg. ?We haven?t really talked to this differentiated, emerging teen base as much as we have that heartland consumer.?

So Mountain Dew signed rapper Lil Wayne as a spokesperson to tap into that market.

But Lil Wayne also caused problems for Mountain Dew this week over lyrics in his song "Karate Chop," about how he wanted to "beat the p***y up like Emmett Till." Till is a civil rights figure who was beaten to death for allegedly whistling at a white woman in 1955.

Although Till's family complained about the lyrics months ago, Wayne only apologized Wednesday after the family released a video asking supporters to go after his endorsement deal.

"Don't do the Dew. His biggest endorsement is through Pepsi's Mountain Dew. Stop buying it, stop lining his pockets. People are outraged because they feel that he should apologize to our family," a Till representative said to camera."

One of the risks of signing with edgy artists with a young following is that they received their edgy reputation by pushing the limits and ignoring social norms.

Even though Tyler told Spin that?"talking about rape and cutting bodies up, it just doesn't interest me anymore," his past lyrics have described how he would?"Rape a pregnant bitch and tell my friends I had a threesome."

Tyler told Rap Radar he was gratified that Mountain Dew had put that aside and was willing to give his new, adult self a shot: "Finally someone looked past the rape or the devil worshiping or the immaturity which is evident in the ad, and they gave me a chance and let me be f***ing seven years old with their product."
