Simple view of gravity does not fully explain the distribution of stars in crowded clusters

Feb. 20, 2013 ? Gravity remains the dominant force on large astronomical scales, but when it comes to stars in young star clusters the dynamics in these crowded environments cannot be simply explained by the pull of gravity.

After analyzing Hubble Space Telescope images of star cluster NGC 1818 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, researchers at the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University in Beijing found more binary star systems toward the periphery of cluster than in the center -- the opposite of what they expected. The surprising distribution of binaries is thought to result from complex interactions among stars within young clusters.

The team's finding will be published in the March 1 print issue of The Astrophysical Journal and is now online.

In the dynamic environment of a star cluster, high-mass stars are thought to gravitate toward the center of a cluster when they give a 'kick' to lower-mass stars and lose energy, explained KIAA Prof. Richard de Grijs, who led the study. This leads them to sink to the cluster center, while the lower-mass stars gain energy and might move to orbits at greater distances from the cluster core. Astronomers call this process "mass segregation."

However, when the Kavli researchers looked closely at binary star systems within NGC 1818, they found a much more complex picture.

Most stars in clusters actually form in pairs, called "binary stars," which initially are located so close to one another that they interact, resulting in the destruction of some binary systems. Other binaries, meanwhile, swap partners. Astronomers had expected that the same process that leads a cluster's most massive stars to gravitate toward the center would also apply to binaries. This is because together, the stars that make up binaries have more mass on average than a single star.

When the astronomers discovered that there were more binaries the farther from the core they observed, they were initially baffled by this unexpected result. They concluded that so-called "soft" binary systems, in which the two stars orbit each other at rather large distances, are destroyed due to close encounters with other stars near the cluster's center. Meanwhile, "hard" binaries, in which the two stars orbit one another at much shorter distances, survive close encounters with other stars much better, all throughout a cluster. This is why more binaries were seen farther out than close in.

Mapping the radial distribution of binary systems in dense star clusters had never been done before for clusters as young as NGC 1818, which is thought to be 15-30 million years old. This is difficult to do in any case, because there are no young clusters nearby in our own Milky Way galaxy. The new result provides new insights into theoretically predicted processes that govern the evolution of star clusters.

"The extremely dynamic interactions among stars in clusters complicates our understanding of gravity," team member Chengyuan Li said. "One needs to investigate the entire physical environment to fully understand what's happening in that environment. Things are usually more complex than they appear."

From 'Destiny' to 'Deep Down,' a look at the PlayStation 4 games

Sony may not have revealed what, exactly, its forthcoming game machine ? the PlayStation 4 ? will look like, but on Wednesday the electronics giant and its partners did give the world a look at some of the games it will play.

At an event in New York City, Sony announced that it will launch the successor to the PlayStation 3 this holiday season (for more on that, check out this story). In doing so, the company introduced a host of game developers and publishers who took to the stage to talk about and show off the thing that will surely be most important to those considering buying a PS4 ? games, games and more games.

And the games they showed off all had one thing in common ? they looked absolutely stunning.

For a peek at the graphical splendor on display, check out the above video highlighting the eye-popping games revealed Wednesday. Meanwhile, read on for a quick recap of the PS4's forthcoming games and a more in-depth look at them in action.

"Knack"

Sony kicked off the game reveals with its own first-party title "Knack." The colorful, action game stars a unique creature that changes sizes and abilities as he helps humanity fight off a goblin army.

The first trailer for the title below and you'll see that it looks like part game, part animated film.

"Deep Down"

Capcom touted the power of the PlayStation 4 as it announced a brand new fantasy game called "Deep Down." Capcom's Yoshinori Ono said the company is developing the game along with a new engine called Panta Rhei which will "allow us to take game design in entirely new directions."

Take a look at the "Deep Down" reveal trailer right here:

"Watch Dogs"

Ubisoft said Wednesday that "Watch Dogs" ? its highly anticipated game of surveillance and hacking ? will be a PlayStation 4 launch title.

?Ubisoft has a strong history of supporting new technologies with unique and creative offerings,? said Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft's CEO. ?The power and capability of the PS4 allows the 'Watch Dogs' team to further push the boundaries of what was previously thought possible in interactive entertainment.?

The company showed off a new demo, highlighting "Watch Dog's" open world gameplay. Check it out:

"Destiny"

Famed game development company Bungie revealed Wednesday that it will be straying from Xbox territory into PlayStation territory. Bungie created the Halo franchise ? a franchise that is exclusively available on Microsoft's Xbox machines. But the company, which parted ways with Microsoft in 2007, announced Wednesday that it will bring its newly revealed project "Destiny" to the PlayStation 4.

"'Destiny' is being developed for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, with both versions available at 'Destiny's' launch," said Harold Ryan, president of Bungie. "'Destiny' will also feature exclusive in-game content, only available on PlayStation."

Not to worry Xbox fans, Bungie says "Destiny" is coming to the Xbox 360, too (and we expect it will launch on Microsoft's yet-to-be-revealed new game machine as well). Check out the new footage, released especially for Wednesday's PlayStation event, below.

"InFamous: Second Son"

As Sucker Punch's Nate Fox introduced a new PlayStation 4 exclusive game "InFamous: Second Son," he told the audience about his experiences of being tear-gassed by police. The game, set in Seattle at a time when surveillance and civil rights violations are the norm, will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Here's the first trailer for the game.

"Killzone: Shadow Fall"

Hermen Hulst, co-founder of Guerrilla Games, introduced the gorgeous-looking "Killzone: Shadow Fall" Wednesday. The futuristic shooter is the latest in the Killzone franchise. Check out his presentation and the first footage of the game below.

"Driveclub"

?We?re making the game we?ve always wanted to make,? said Matt Southern from Evolution Studios as he introuced "Driveclub." ?We?ve waited for the technology to be available to deliver our vision.?

He said "Diveclub" will not only deliver eye-popping next generation graphics, but the team-based racing game will give players and racing clubs the ability to be more connected than ever as they put the (virtual) pedal to the (virtual) metal. Check out the below trailer for a look at just how incredibly detailed the cars in the game are.

"The Witness"

Respected indie developer Jonathan Blow ? the creator of the critically acclaimed puzzle game "Braid" ? showed off his newest project Wednesday, announcing that "The Witness" will arrive first on the PlayStation 4 during the machine's "launch window."

"It's a game where you explore a mysterious abandoned island and solve the puzzles that you find there," he explained. "But at its heart -- at its core -- it's a game about epiphany. It's about that instantaneous transition of the mind that takes you from confusion to understanding."

Blow added that "The Witness" set in an open world allowing players to go wherever they want to, but "whereas most games in open worlds try to make their worlds as big as possible so you'll be impressed by the sheer scale of the endeavor, in 'The Witness' we're trying to make the world as compact as possible so that you have a very dense experience that makes the best use of your time."

Intrigued? Here's a look at the game:

"Final Fantasy" and "Diablo 3"

So many games. So little time. Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto revealed that his company will bring a new Final Fantasy game to the PlayStation 4 and said it will be shown off for the first time this summer at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Blizzard ? which is best known for its PC games ? said it is taking "Diablo 3" from the PC to both the PS4 and the PS3.

Beautiful tech demos

Some companies didn't have games to reveal Wednesday, but instead fired up tech demos to show off the PlayStation 4's abilities.

David Cage from the renowned studio Quantic Dream, talked up how the PlayStation 4 will allow developers to create extremely realistic-looking characters with extremely realistic-looking emotions. He then showed off how his team had been able to use the PlayStation 4 to create the head and face of an elderly man, rendered in eye-popping detail.

Meanwhile, Media Molecule ? the development company behind the LittleBigPlanet games ? demonstrated a tool that would enable players to use the PlayStation Move controller and the PS4 to craft digital sculptures and bring them to life.

So PlayStation fans ? what did you think of the PS4 games shown off Wednesday? Did they make you want to start saving your money for the new machine (even though, well, Sony hasn't said yet how much it will cost)?

For a further look at Sony's event Wednesday, check out InGame editor Todd Kenreck's first look at the PlayStation 4:

Chesapeake Energy 4Q Profit Falls 36%

Chesapeake Energy Corp.'s fourth-quarter earnings fell 36% despite higher revenue, as the natural-gas producer pared its crushing debt.

The earnings report gave investors their first glimpse of Chesapeake, the country's second-largest gas producer after Exxon Mobil Corp., without longtime Chief Executive Aubrey McClendon at the helm. Mr. McClendon, who led the Oklahoma City-based company during an epic growth spurt, is retiring from the company on April 1 under pressure from the company's largest shareholders.

The energetic executive, who normally dominates earnings calls, let Chief Operating Officer Steve Dixon take the lead on Thursday.

Mr. Dixon restated Chesapeake's commitment to now focus on harvesting the oil and natural gas from its existing acreage and continuing to sell assets to bridge a $4 billion funding gap as it shifts its focus from natural gas to more profitable oil production.

"To this end during the past year, all of our assets teams have been retasked and incentivized to shift their focus from acreage capture mode to meeting budgets and delivering higher returns on capital," Mr. Dixon said during the call.

Overall, Chesapeake reported a profit of $300 million, or 39 cents a share, down from $472 million, or 63 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding debt-repurchase expenses, hedging impacts and other items, adjusted earnings fell to 26 cents a share from 58 cents. Revenue climbed 30% to $3.54 billion.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had projected earnings of 14 cents a share and revenue of $2.86 billion.

Chesapeake and other producers that pioneered hydraulic fracturing have become victims of their own success. The drilling boom they unleashed greatly increased the amount of natural gas produced from shale formations, causing prices for the commodity to collapse and putting a dent in their expansion plans.

Chesapeake lowered its estimate for gas prices in 2013 and projected its total output will fall by roughly 7% due to a drop in natural-gas production, even as its production of oil and natural-gas liquids will rise by 27%.

The prolonged fall in prices caused Chesapeake to slash its reserves in the fourth quarter by 16% to 15.7 trillion cubic feet of oil and natural gas.

Average daily production was flat sequentially but rose 9.3% from a year ago, led by oil production, which grew to 15% of total production from 10%. Average realized prices for oil improved 4.8%, while those for natural-gas and natural-gas liquids weakened sharply. Chesapeake said it sold natural gas for $2.02 per million British thermal units in the fourth quarter, a year-over-year decline of more than 20%.

Chesapeake said it made headway in curbing spending. The company said it spent $1.4 billion on drilling and leaseholding in the fourth quarter, down from $2.4 billion the quarter before. The company also said its long-term debt fell by $3.6 billion from the third quarter, to $12 billion.

"Cost control and lower capex in the quarter was a pleasant surprise," said Jefferies analyst Biju Perincheril in a client note. "The challenge, however, for the new management will be bringing operations to near cash flow neutral status without greatly sacrificing its upside potential."

Chesapeake has long been optimistic about natural-gas prices, but it said it hedged 50% of its 2013 natural-gas output at $3.62 per million cubic feet. The hedge may be a sign of lessening appetite for risk, analysts said. It hedged 85% of its oil output at $95.45 a barrel.

On Wednesday, Chesapeake's new board said an internal investigation under way since April found no wrongdoing in Mr. McClendon's controversial personal-financing methods. The probe covered a loan Mr. McClendon received from a former board member, the trading activities of a hedge fund he helped run until 2007, and his borrowing from firms that do business with Chesapeake.

While a Chesapeake without Mr. McClendon might satisfy many investors, including the large shareholders that led the revolt against him, some analysts will miss the executive's electrifying style. Chesapeake didn't have "the same flair on the conference call without McClendon," Morningstar's Mark Hanson said.

Chesapeake shares were up 0.44% at $20.33.

Apple iPhone 5 and 4S both outsell Galaxy S III in fourth quarter

Apple had not just one but the top two bestselling smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to a report released Wednesday.

Strategy Analytics estimates that Apple sold 27.4 million units of its iPhone 5 in the quarter, and 17.4 million units of the iPhone 4S. Together that accounted for more than 20% of all smartphones sold globally during that period.

QUIZ: Test your Apple knowledge

In the previous quarter, Samsung's Galaxy S III was the top-selling smartphone, with 18 million units sold. But GS3 sales dropped to 15.4 million units in the fourth quarter. Apple rolled out the iPhone 5 in September.

Despite the drop, Strategy Analytics said that Samsung could quickly recapture the sales crown with its next flagship Galaxy smartphone, which could be revealed as early as next month.

"Global demand for the Galaxy S III appears to have peaked and Samsung will surely be keen to introduce its rumored Galaxy S IV upgrade in the coming weeks to fight back against Apple?s popular iPhone range," the report said.?
